He has about 100 boys in the program, takes part in district meetings and provides valuable leader­ ship to thfs group. Leo has also served as a Lit­ tle League manager the past two years, showing "patience, un­ derstanding and devotion to the children." JILL JOHNSTON STARTS CAREER AS STEWARDESS JILL JOHNSTON Miss Jill Diane Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al- ford S. Johnston of 3805 West Grove, McHenry, has graduated from Eastern Airlines' flight attendant training center in Mi­ ami, Fla., and has started her career as a stewardess. Miss Johnston is a graduate of McHenry high school, where she was a class officer. She also is a graduate of Illinois State university, where she was homecoming candidate and sweetheart candidate. After completing stewardess training, Miss Johnston report­ ed to Chicago, where she will be based. She will fly to many of the ninety-six airports East­ ern serves in twenty-eight states, the District of Colum­ bia, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. JAMES MEYER IN BAND NIGHT AT UNIVERSITY All University Band Night Nov. 5 at Iowa State univer­ sity presented the symphony band, concert band, and march­ ing band in joint concert. They were conducted by Acton Ost- ling, Jr., director of bands, and Joseph Messenger, assis­ tant director of bands. The performance was held in the C.Y. Stephens auditorium. Among members of the con­ cert and marching bands is James Meyer, 1210 S. Black- hawk, McHenry, trombone play­ er. The grasshopper has two pairs of wings--one pair is held in place rigidly, like airplane wings during flight, and the oth­ er pair vibrates, and serves as propellers. OUTSTANDING RICHMOND MEN ARE RECOGNIZED Two outstanding men in the Richmond area were honored by the Richmond-Burton Jay­ cees last week when they were named recipients of two spec­ ial awards for community lea­ dership and service. Richard Jacobson, 34, was named the Outstanding Young Farmer. Leo* Smith, 31, was named the winner of the Dis­ tinguished Service Award for notable community leadership and his work with young people. This is the second year for the award banquet sponsored by the fledging Jaycees group. Last year's honors went to Pete Ehorn, Distinguished Ser­ vice Award winner, and Rich­ ard Wood, Outstanding Educa­ tor. Featured speaker at the ban­ quet was hard-hitting, straight- talking Mayor Robert Sabonjian of Waukegan.
