At toe moment, there does not seem to be an answer to this question, but some alarming statistics il lustrate the dramatic increase in the prevalence of diabetes. In the last two decades, the number of diabetics in the United States has about doubled, to an estimated 4,200,000 per sons. And for several logical reasons this geometric rise will continue in the future. Today diabetes ranks seventh among the causes of death by disease in this country. Yet, paradoxically, most diabetics eventually die of some other complication, such as heart dis ease, cerebral hemorrhage, or kidney disease. Thus the in fluence of diabetes on mortal ity rates is by far more-g^r- vasive than the official figures indicate. An because there is no known cure for the condition, this influence will be stronger in the years to come. Why"? 4 The answer to this question can be summarized in five key words: age, pop ulation, heredity, obesity and detection. And it is the older person who is particularly prone to diabetes. While it is true that the disorder can occur at a very early age, four out of five diabetics are pver 45 when they develop the disorder. Older wo men are especially susceptible: Between the ages of 55 and 64, the diabetic rate among women is twice as high as among men. In 1950, about 150 million persons lived in the United States. Today the population is more than 200 million. The A- merican Diabetes Association estimates that one person in twenty is an actual, an unknown, or a potential diabetic. As the population increases, so does the number of diabetics. Diabetes is known to run in families. Most diabetics have had at least one blood rela tive who was a diabetic. If both parents have diabetes, the chances are that all their chil dren will develop diabetes at some time, if they live long enough. In addition, the Assoc iation estimates that some 50 million Americans (one infour) are "carriers" of diabetes -- they may transmit the disorder to offspring without developing the condition themselves. Today more people are eat ing richer foods than at any time in history. The richer a nation's diet, the greater the trend to obesity, and there is a close relationship between diabetes and obesity. More than eight out of ten adults who de velop diabetes are overweight before their condition develops. A planned diet, leading to weight reduction, is usually the first step prescribed by a physic ian who is treating an over weight, newly diagnosed di abetic. A final reason for the rapid increase in the diabetes rate is the only encouraging part of the picture. Modern screen ing and diagnostic techniques are adding people to the diabet ic population before they might otherwise be included. The ear lier someone's diabetes is de tected and treatment begins, the easier he can control it. Those who benefit most from detection tests are the mild diabetics who have the disor der but don't yet know about it. There are more than 1,600,000 of these "hidden" diabetics in this country. To help these people, the American Diabetes association, together with affiliate associa tions and medical societies, sponsors annual diabetes de tection drives. Each year-long drive begins with Diabetes Week: Nov. 16 to 22 this year. Everyone in the community is urged to take theMest. Those who are over forty, weigh more than they should, and have a family history of diabetes are especially urged to be tested.
