WEGENER Martin S. Wegener of 3506 W. Pearl street, McHenry was pronounced dead on arrival at McHenry hospital shortly after 'midnight Dec. 10. Coroner Ehorn /conducted an investi­ gation which revealed that death was due to a heart attack. Mr. Wegener, 61 years of age, was born in Mundy, Texas, Dec. 8, 1908. He lived here most of hi» life and egaged in car­ pentry as a trade. The deceased was a mem­ ber of Libertyville Local 1996, Carpenters Union. He also was a member of St. Mary's court, No. 594, National Catholic Or* der of Foresters. Survivors are his wife, Hel­ en (Wagner); three sons, James H. of McHenry, Warren A., of Arlington Heights and Gerald J. of McHenry; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley (William) Karls and Mrs. Joan (Gordon) Miller of Richmond; twelve grandchil­ dren; three brothers, Henry of Tucson, Ariz., Joseph of Volo and Edward of McHenry. Three brothers, Peter, Tony and Al, preceded him in death. A funeral Mass will be of­ fered at 10 o'clock Saturday from St. Mary's Catholic church, with burial in> the church cemetery. ALBERT C. HASS Albert C. Hass, 83, of 3912 W. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake, died Wednesday night, Dec. 10, in Sherman hospital, Elgin. Mr. Hass was born Feb. 4, 1886, in Illinois. He was a carpenter by trade. His wife, Augusta, preceded him in death. Mr. Hass leaves one daughter, Lynda Haas, and two sons, Roger and Clifford, all of Wonder Lake; also two grandchildren. The body will rest at the George R. Justen & Son chapel after 2 o'clock Friday. Services will be conducted from the fun­ eral home at 10 o'clock Sat­ urday morning, with burial in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Hillside. FRI. The suggestion that some­ one is worse of! for earning more income than he was if he had earned less is just not so, the Committee notes. There are several reasons for this. For one thing, any­ one paying at the 70 per cent rate does so only on amounts above $200,000 of taxable income in a year. For an­ other, the affluent have tax loopholes available to them that reduce their taxable in­ come. And for a third, even at the 70 per cent rate, the taxpayer still has more left after taxes that he would have if he hadn't received the money in the first place. Those who criticize the 70 per cent rates often neglect to mention that they pay the same taxes on amounts under $200,000 as those who earn less. Thb first $ 1,000 of taxable income, for instance, costs $140 in federal income tax whether the taxpayer has $1,000 or $1 million in in­ come. The $200,000 tax­ payer pays the same $800 on his $4,000 between $8,000 and $12,000 and $1,920 on his income between $40,000 and $44,000 as he would if he had a total taxable income of $12,000 or $44,000. The actual tax on $200,- 000 is $110,980, or 55 per cent. And that $200,000 often is only a fraction of the ac­ tual income of an affluent taxpayer. Because he can af­ ford to use tax loopholes, the affluent taxpayer can take ad­ vantage of investments that give him tax-free income through oil depletion allow­ ances, capital gains, real property depreciation and other types of earnings not open to less well-to-do Amer­ icans whose wages or salaries go for day-to-day expenses.
