And then use a check list to help you decide whether a house meets your needs. What is the condition of play­ grounds in the area? What is the traffic situation? --Size of house: Does the amount of space fit the fam­ ily's size, possessions and ac­ tivities? --Space arrangement: Can you get from one room to an­ other without going through the middle of a room? Is there a front entrance hall? Is there easy access to front and back doors? --Storage: Is there adequate storage in the living, sleeping and work areas? --Construction: Is there ev­ idence of excess moisture or water seepage in the basement? If the basement is unfinished, check on the soundness of struc­ ture. If you are inexperienced at judging construction, get ad­ vice from a professional in the housing business. Are there any cracks in the plaster that need attention? Is there any in­ dication of water condensation around windows? Are the floors firm and even? - -Heat ing , l igh t ing and plumbing systems: Is the heating system in good con­ dition and does it work effic­ iently? What were the fuel bills last season? Is the plumbing in good condition? Are pipes noisy when the water is turned on? Is the electrical system ad­ equate? --Exterior design: Does the house have a pleasing appear­ ance? Is the roof in good con­ dition? A sagging roof line us­ ually indicates structural prob­ lems-a poor foundation or in­ adequate support. Observe roofing and siding materials and consider the cost of main­ tenance. Since very few houses will have all the characteristics you desire, evaluate each house in relation to what is most im­ portant to you and your family. Although families can make many preliminary decisions about a house, Miss Pifer rec­ ommends that you have the house evaluated by a profes­ sional and that you consult a lawyer about legal matters.
