E. at Drlvg-ln some of the departments at Memorial Hospital for McHen-. ry County. Harold Nye of McHenry, who heads the public relations com mittee for the board of direc tors of the hospital association, says the variety of careers can be viewed from a ringside seat but that many other careers in the health world come to the young person's attention be cause of the proximity to peo ple who are health-minded ev ery day. Part-time jobs often are a- vailable. Tours of the hospital and personal interviews with department heads in the many departments offer added ways to learn about careers in the health care field. One example of a reward ing career in this area is in the physical therapy department where both men and women work as physical therapists. "These specialists restore human ac tivity and they are skilled pro fessionals who work with both young and old. Perhaps this morning it is an accident vic tim who needs help. Before noon, the therapist has assist ed a stroke patient and a young ster born with some defect-- but who is becoming active through the patience and love of the therapist. "One of the great benefits of a career in the health care is the personal satisfaction that comes from knowing you are helping someone--and seeing that person respond with love and respect," says Nye. Another career possibility is in dietetics and nutrition where dietitians make food count! Many types of specialists are pos sible in this area, and one ar ea that's growing in interest and importance is a sub-pro fession called food service su pervisor--a person who over sees the complex task of mak ing sure each patient receives the kinds and amounts of f< ordered by the dietician. Nye hopes his remarks help some young man or wo- N man become aware of the scope of careers available in the health care arena. Some re quire a few months' training. Some require a few years, and others require many vears. Perhaps Nye's reminder about the vast field of challenges and opportunities in health careers will open the eyes of some young person--and it could be the best Christmas present they'll receive for it could be the inspiration that will lead to a lifetime career of service and delight in helping one's fellow man! Drivers Seat One of the most common types of fatal accidents on high-speed expressways is the rear-end collision involving a passenger car and a truck. A six-year study on the heav ily-traveled New Jersey Turn pike on the eastern U.S. sea board shows that 65.5 per cent of all fatal accidents occur when cars run into the backs of trucks, and that 75 per cent of them happen at night. Why are there more of these accidents at night than during the day? Highway hypnosis and fatigue are two factors. Re duced visibility is another. The most dangerous factor, how ever, is that motorists are not able to accurately judge their speed in relation to other mov ing objects on the road. At night the driver cannot ac curately determine the size of the vehicle ahead. He must rely on its rear lights to judge his approach. He tends to misjudge the taillights of the slowly mov ing vehicle a short distance a- head as being farther away. Headlights often don't warn soon enough. Or, because of faulty perception, you start a normal braking action and find that you are coming up too rap idly on the vehicle ahead. At high speeds, it often is too late. One of the most positive steps being taken to lessen the rear- end collision danger at night comes from the trucking indus try. Many haulers are utilizing bright reflective material for lettering and corporate emblem designs on the rear of their trucks. Visible in headlights at more than 2,000 feet, this reflective sheeting can define the bulk of a truck well before the motor ist approaches too closely. Be cause of this, the safety depart ment of the American Truckers' Association recommends that all trucks be marked across the rear with large reflective chev rons. 7lU/e&'4. for M E N When selecting a gift for him .... let us help! Father John Strzalka Pastor c j s; s:5 ;s imHiwiiiiiiiii Three wise and good men followed a star one night in search of truth, in search of peace. Their quest led them to a town called Bethlehem where lay an infant Babe. Then and there, new hope for mankind was born. Two centuries later, we are still on a desperate quest for peace. But as yet our path is not as easy as those who followed the light of a star, nor is it likely that we will find our answer in historic Bethlehem. But the message of that place is still as clear, still as strong, if only we will heed the words. Seek Him, and you shall find Him . . . in quiet con templation, in prayer, in church He waits to welcome you. Go to church this Sunday. Pray not only for your own needs, but for all the world! Pray for peace! Goodwill to all men! Copyright 1969 Keisler A d v e r t i s i n g Serv i ce , Inc .
