\ PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1975 Bellingrath Gardens Beauty Spot Of Alabama BELLINGRATH GARDENS (by Father William O. Banner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church, Episcopal. Kenilworth). Across our land lie many famous gardens built by people of wealth. Among them are the Huntington in San Marino, Calif. I- described this garden in the Plaindealer of Feb. 8, 1974. Winterthur in Delaware is a Dupont planting There are three around Charleston. South Carolina, and Calloway in Georgia, which we hope to see on the way north, in March. Last week we went, for the third time in our lives, to Bellingrath Gardens, south west of Mobile a few miles. These gardens are the work of Bessie Norse Bellingrath and her husband. He was for years a major figure in a soft drink firm in whose product we have all indulged ourselves. The site of these gardnes was a semi-tropical jungle where the Bellingraths built a fishing lodge for their private hide away on the Isle-Aux-Oies river, we would call it Fowl river. The gardens were first opened to the public in 1932. A fee is charged and a larger one if you wish to see the mansion the Bellingraths built. All the profits from this enterprise are, by the builder's will, devised to the operation of certain schools and churches. Of course they support the gardens. One of the basic rules of great gardens is to have a continuous round of bloom all year ' through. The day we went the Christmas poinsettias were just being removed. Beds of future blooms, tulips (rare here), daffodils, and other spring flowers were up 5 inches. Pansies and amaryllis were on full display. The greatest show Bellingrath displays is in the Camellia arboretum. There are truly hundreds of varieties. Some are early bloomers, September; some are late, April. The main display blooms from late December through February. The shades and coloring run the spectrum, white through pinks to dark reds, no yellow or blue. There are shrubs that have white and others nearly black blooms. There are single rows of petals and flowers as full as peonies, all are from the Japonica family. Upon a lake within the gardens float several huge white swans and two black ones. There are a dozen tall pink flamingoes like the ones at Hialeah race track near Miami. The big cob swan takes no monkey business from the flamingoes.^ He shoos them away from his ladies. Both v»c i°ot M ,vV*e * \\ 9 rZt, Shop HORNSBY 'S first and pocket the J SAVING®!̂ !!! Many great gardens have special side interests devoted to some specialty. At Huntington it was cacti and Japanese (very fitting in California). At Bellingrath, there is a delightful small nook devoted to hollies and a rather large and overly showy Japanese garden with a poorly done Zen area. The fine Zen gardens of Japan should not be attempted in the United States unless they are really appreciated. A Zen garden unraked or cluttered is so anti-Jfifeas to be ridiculous. It must Dring a sense of peace. It must be in the sun. Zen gardens are a Japanese specialty in which raked sands or small pebbles may stand for the sea, rocky areas for mountains and a few miniature trees for forests. They are meant as areas for meditation). - I have never seen the rose garden at Bellingrath in bloom, we are winter visitors. Their greenhouse behind the rose garden is a very special place and has many treasures in it. If you drive between Florida and home, come around through these fine gardens some year. You will be well repaid. Dolphin Island with its old fort is nearby. * By the way, there is an old fort of the coast near Biloxi which ths sea has now covered. Its old well still flows. You can have a drink of pure water from the Gulf of Mexico if you know the right spot. There is a Volkswagon with an Alaskan license outside our door. It belongs to a young couple who have just driven it down from ALASKA - through the winter yet. They both work at the field and are enlisted in the Air Force. Would you drive from Alaska to Mississippi in December? Neither would I. We continue with a lot of beautiful clear days - crisp and fine. Then we get rain for a spell. I suppose it is due to the political situation. With Congress in session there is no telling what will happen to the weather. Oh! I nearly forgot. They have a motel to park your dog while you see Bellingrath Gardens. Village of Evelyn Sandell Sunnyside 385-2696 Set Deadline For Display Of Vehicle Stickers People keep ignoring my warning that their vehicle stickers must be displayed on their cars by Feb. 15. My office hours are Monday from 7 to 9 in the evening and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any other day call and if I am home I will gladly sell you one. Remember there are only eight days before you are liable for a ticket. HOSPITALIZED Sorry to hear Lou Kussrath has been hospitalized since a heart attack last week. Hope she will be on the mend and back home again soon. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH It was suggested we start a neighbor-to-neighbor watch in the village. I know the village is being patroled very well but it would be a good idea if your neighbor is away to keep an eye on his property. If something looks unusual make sure he has not returned and then give the police a call to have the situation looked into. It's better to be safe than sorry. If you go away for any length of time tell the police so they can also keep an eye on your home. SYMPATHY We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of A1 May, who died suddenly last Friday of a heart attack. BIRTHDAYS A very, very happy birthday to Rich Gam perl, whose bir thday was on the third. Patty Sallaz will be sweet sixteen on the fifth. Hope you both had a good time. NEW ARRIVALS Congratulations are due Linda and Bill Panerali on their new offspring. They had a little boy 5 lbs., 13 oz. His name is Brian. Mr. and Mrs. Boike had a ^little girl, 9 lbs., 13 oz. Her name is Danell. Her sister, Carrie, anxiously waited at home for the new baby to make her appearance. r VA NEWS Q - I am a female veteran going to school under the GI Bill. Seek One Observance Of Memorial Holiday State Senator Jack Schaffer, R-Cary, this week introduced legislation in the Illinois Senate to make the state's observance of Memorial day conform to the date recognized by the federal government. Schaffer said he would personally prefer to return to the' custom of celebrating Memorial Day on May 30. regardless of the day on which it falls, but for the sake of en ding confusion it would be best to have the state recognize the same date as the federal government for celebration of the holiday. Schaffer. a veteran himself, stated, this year the federal government will celebrate Memorial day Monday. May 26 (this is the day children will be out of school) and state government will celebrate Memorial day on Friday. May 30 (this is the day most parents will be off work). "This is a case where the legislature needs to realize it simply made a mistake, and that the error should be corrected as soon as possible," he said Because of the two different dates recognized for Memorial day last year, many families were unable to be together to celebrate the holiday. In addition, no one could tell what stores or government offices were going to be open on what day." Schaffer added, "The split dates did nothing but create chaos and confusion, and the situation should be rectified as soon as possible." Another stipulation of Schaffer's bill is that May 30 of each year would conntinue to be recognized as a com memorative holiday. This means organizations wishing to officially observe Memorial day on that date would be able to do so legitimately. He concluded, "It is ex tremely important that we not again allow a situation to occur where children and their parents are forced to be separated on this important day meant to be used to remember those men and women who have died in the service of their country."
