HELPING PAWS i 815 459-2641> By Nancy Hanson Someone may offer to sell you baby chicks or ducklings to give to your children for Faster presents. These may seem like cute presents, in one of your Aveaker moments, but please (resist the temptation These animals are not pets, but J 'arm animals, and should alwys be handled as such. It is estimated that 5ft percent (it this type ol Faster pet" does not survive two weeks This isn't fair to the animal or to the child receiving the animal. ' • Our neighbors' Faster ducklings survived for months. Then when the weather per mitted them to be taken outside" land the house aired out > they were built a special pen and given all the extra care they required All this did them no good, though, when some wild animal, during the night, tore open ".J he chicken wire and dragged away every one of the ducklings. These type of pens are also a terrible temptation for dogs in the neighborhood. I 'm sure that very lew "Faster pet" stories have ever turned out to have happy en dings. Even if you find a farm to take the animal, the child has to sutler parting with it Consider one of our puppies, kittens, dogs or cats as your Faster pet. Being a pet. is what • logs and cats are all about. Helping Paws needs volunteers to house one ol our stray dogs. His food and medication will be paid for by Helping Paws II you adopt an animal from this column, adoption papers should be fil led out at the time of adoption and a donation is requested. Helping Paws also needs people to do telephoning for us trom their homes. They must have call pak in order to keep down the cost of calling all around this area. ; For any information, please call Helping Paws any week day from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 815-459,-2641. College Man Sets Goals DON ROSE Otto Preminger, Peter Bogdonavich, Salvatore Dali, Woody Allen, Edward Weston, and Don Rose? Most l ikely everyone is aware that the first five persons above are great visual artists -- but Don Rose? Don is a McHenry County college graduate from McHenry who has developed his own photography-graphic design studio. Having graduated from the west campus of McHenry high school, Don entered MCC in 1973 and graduated in December, '74, with an Associate of Applied Science degree. While at MCC, after com pletion of the three photo- related courses through the art and graphic arts departments, Don became very interested in photography. So interested in fact, that he started his own business during his freshman year. His conception of an idea and hard work has developed into a prosperous endeavor. Don was listed in "Who's Who in American Junior Colleges," was an assistant in the photography department and Photo club coordinator while a full-time student at MCC. With his t ight schedule, Don stil l found time to be the buyer for the electrical department of a large hardware store in McHenry. Although Don has received his degree from MCC, he is back this year taking courses he didn't get a change to take before. He has recently been named a winner in the S t u d e n t A c h i e v e m e n t Recognition program. In the future, Don plans to further his education at an Art- Design school or possibly at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, where he plans to eventually obtain a Master 's degree in the visual communications field. Don plans to continue his career in the visual arts by opening a design studio and possibly a retail store in the western states.
