GALAXY - At 7:30 Only! By Dick Rabbitt The spring sport activities at McHenry High School are going to be delayed by the weather. With the Warriors of Coach Ken Swanson scheduled for six baseball games this week, along with Gary Gray's tennis squad engaging in four mat ches, the outlook for the openers are very dim. It is hoped by both coaches that the snow will melt, and the weather become much warmer in the very near furture. All gamps and matches are non year. Must be they have something special in the way of entertainment. Now comes a letter from our old friend. Congressman Bob McClory, offering a booklet on "Growing Vegetables." We do real well, with dan delions, but just the thought of a vegetable garden gives us a backache. We are sending for the booklet -- just in case. However, if we should weaken, our first thought would be to seek advice from our next door neighbor, Mrs. Ford Hanford, She knows how. There were some great gardeners in our neighborhood, but time has caught up to some of them. Kate Schreiner is disabled. Emma Freund is still spry, but has cut down on the size of her patch. Mrs. Unti was a great one, but we're not so sure her daughter, Lillian Cairns, is such an expert. Mrs. Dick Frett shows experience. Then there is Virginia Keutzer (?). With the weatherman holding up spring sports at our high school, Dick Rabbitt won't have much to report for this issue. Looks like we will have to scratch around to fill a sports page. THE BEST THING TO GIVE... The best thing to give your enemy is forgiveness: --to an opponent, tolerance; --to a friend, your ear; --to your child, good example; --to a father, reverence; --to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; --to yourself, respect; --to all men, charity. Ben Franklin On Sat., March 8, Phil Thorne and Fred Berg of the McHenry Hornets Jr., football team, attended a coaches clinic conducted by championship coaches. Coaches from all over the state were in attendance. The speakers were Clint Evans, Willowbrook high school, 73-74 record 18-2, DuPage coach of the year. 73-74-champs, Harold Samorian, Glenbrook North, Class 5A state champs, Leahy coach of the year, past 4 years - - 31-5-2. West All-star coach, Bob Pellant, Rockford East, Class 4A champs, currently on 22 game winning streak. Bob Binette, Hillcrest, 73-74 S.I.C.A. champs, seniors won 33 in a row, varsity 17 in a row. Jim Lvne, St. Viators, 4 year record 29-8-2, East Suburban champs. Phil Thorne, head coach of the Hornets stated that even with most of his coaches having played college football, we still attend at least one clinic per year. We pick up 6 to 8 new ideas, which help us to become better coaches. The Hornets are still looking for players over 80 lbs. Any grade school boy interested may get in formation by calling 385-6333 during the day. TUESDAY MID-NITE SPECIALS TOMASELLOS 9:30 P.M. Monday and Tuesday's games were canceled because of the wet infield. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) COOKING VEGETABLES Cooking vegetables in a small amount of water, and not over cooking them are two ways to retain vitamins. If you insist on boiling the,m in more water than is recommended, remember the broth from cabbage, turnips, and rutabagas can make an excellent base for soups and stews The sun shone down to help make Easter the happy and glorious day it is supposed to be. But, it wasn't much of a day for the gals to step out in their Easter finery. As if anybody cared, we wore our winter coat and old (con- fortable) hat. It has always been our contention that good players can make a coach look good. Now we hear that the great one, John Wooden, is retiring as coach at UCLA. From Coach Wooden's outstanding record as a high school coach, then in college, we have to believe that it wasn't all good material that made him a winner. It made our day when the Stangarones brought John's mother to our table at the Longhorn for a visit recently. She's a grand lady in our book. . The time has come for big time baseball teams to cut their squads to 25 players and many a rookie is unhappy. They come from the minors with strong -irms and hope. Then comes tne sad day when they take their strong arms to the bushes and leave hope behind. Rookies aren't shrinking violets these days. They blast the management before they pack their bags. Imagine a raw rookie blasting a manager like the immortal John McGraw! They would get a one-way ticket back to the minors-- never to return. Clyde Blackwell was in to give us a Puppet Show that he wanted to have finished for St. Patrick's Day. Very clever. Things like that make us wish we were born with some talent.
