Hermie Davis, RN, and company president, Jim Miller. At 376 pounds and heaviest enrollee, the man dwarfs Mrs. Davis, 5:4^ and 137 pounds, and Miller, 6:1 and 170 pounds. "If you lose too much, you could wind up owning the company," Miller noted at the weighing in ceremony. An Illinois manufacturer in Spring Grove is paying em ployees to lose weight -- at the rate of $3 per pound. Some 143 of the 500 person work force have signed up to lose nearly three tons (5,867 pounds) within the next year. "We stand to pay more than $17,600," says Jim Miller, president of Intermatic, Inc., timer and heater maker, who came up with the idea. "The program, though limited to those 15 pounds overweight by insurance weight tables, has enrolled seven persons more than 100 pounds overweight," he said. The heaviest contender is 176 pounds overweight, and the average enrollee weighs in at 41 pounds above average. In announcing the program. Miller noted, "Overweight is a disease that kills. Life in surance studies show that there is a definite relation between health and weight. The over weight person is prone to a variety of ailments -- high blood pressure, heart trouble, diabetes and kidney disease -- and the odds are against living to a ripe old age. There is no magic drug which will ever cure this disease. Only the victim can cure himself. We want to help." About two years ago In termatic began a program to reduce cigarette smoking among employees by offering $50 to anyone who would quit for a year. Ten people were awarded $50 each. The names of those who enrolled in the weight reduction campaign will be kept secret and will not be released during or after the program without the consent of the person in volved. On March 19,1976, all of those who enrolled will be weighed. All those who have lost a minimum of 15 pounds will be paid $3 per pound for each pound of loss, without limit. Peter Petges Joins Staff Of Land Bank Peter Petges has joined the staff of the Federal Land Bank association of DeKalb- Woodstock as an associate manager, John D. Webb, manager, announced this week. Petges, who has served in a similar position at the Federal Land Bank association of Hillsboro, will headquarter the newly-established branch of fice at Geneva in Kane county. He will concentrate on loans ' in Kane and DuPage counties, but will be available to assist in DeKalb, McHenry, Boone and Lake counties when needed, Webb said. The FLBA of DeKalb- Woodstock has its headquar ters office at DeKalb, where 1 Webb is located, and a fully- 'staffed branch office at Woodstock where Bill Hahn is '* the associate manager. Webb said the addition of Petges, a native of Seneca, Illinois, is necessary because of the sizable growth of FLBA loans outstanding in the past few years. * 1 K E Farm and rural families in the seven-county area served by the association had $44 million in loans outstanding at the end of 1974. That represents an increase of 40 per cent over the loans outstanding at the end of 1973. Net new money loaned of more than $13.4 million is up 57 per cent over a year ago, while the number of new loans made during 1974 totaled 183, 40 per cent over the preceding year's business.
