PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 1975 We didn't gel results on changing the weather so Dick Rabbitt writes again: "Come on and kiss that blarney stone, this has to stop." The weatherman really gave the spring sports program a kick in the teeth. Several events were cancelled, never to, be made up. Time is running out. The day may come when major league baseball powers will have to take another look They could take a week off the spring start and another off at the end of the season without doing any harm. We expect to watch football EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ in any kind of weather, but darned if we want to wear an overcoat and boots to a h.'lM'h.'ll! «rt tru ll you have a picture album -or box of old pictures, write J he names on them. Bob Green brought us a picture of Barbian Bros. Cigar factory showing the owners and employees. That goes back a long way. May not be able to find anyone to identify those pictures. If you can help, please let us know. Also have a picture of a McHenry baseball team taken back in 1906. Who is around today to identify them? Bob Weber was the bat boy and his lather "Pete" was the manager. Lou Bending is one of the players. "Doc" Spurling was the umpire. Some big time newspapers looked mighty foolish after they came out with definite stories as to who would be the new Illinois basketball coach. Reminded us of the time big election headlines told the world "DEWEY BEATS TRUMAN". They should have added: "We hope." They wouldn't have looked so foolish. While other birds in our back yard eat like pigs, those fat robins just seem to stand around and do nothing. How do they get so plump? There is good news tonight! "White Sox rally to beat A's 7 to 5." -- That's what the man said April '75 will be known as the year of the big snow. Some storm that clobbered us last week. Had plugs in our snow tires so had to take them off before the first day of April. Reports told us there would be snow (not THAT much), but snow was a-comin'. You would think somebody would have had authority and good judgement to grant an extension of time. Oh, no! The law is the law. And they had taken down a lot of snow fences in March. That's to allow the farmers to plant oats. Haven't seen much oat planting this year. Remember one year when the Chicago policemen had to change to summer uniforms on a certain date. The winds blew and the snow snew, but orders were to change. Bet the guy who gave the order was sitting in a warm office. Must be that horses have the horse sense. PICKUPS: Jelly is a food usually found on bread, children, and piano keys. A day of worry is more exhausting than a week of work. Beefing won't bring home the bacon. INDOOR PRACTICE . . . continues as the inclement weather has kept the McHenry Warriors off the playing field in their first seven games so far. Coach Ken Swanson looks on as hurlers Terry Gough (L) and Dave Wickenkamp keep their pitching arms in shape while they wait for Mother Nature to bring on the baseball weather. All conference games will be made up as well as some of the non- conference ones. Rte. 120 > Daily 9-5 McHENRY PH: 385-3344 Sundays By Appointment On The Sidelines With Dick Rabbit t The Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association is coming on strong for a revision of the spring baseball schedule. They are in the process of sending out ballots to all baseball coaches in the state for voting on two options. Option one is to leave the season as it is, by that I mean starting in late February or early March and ending with a state tournament in June, with a optional summer program. Option two calls for a later spring start, May and continue after school is out ending in July with the possibility of a state tourney in July. The advantage of Option II are warmer and drier weather, only one season of play (May to July) more fan support during the warmer weather, and that coaches can take a spring vacation. However, the disadvantages are greater. It could all but eliminate Pony League and American Legion baseball. Will coaches receive extra compensation for increased time, the possibility of losing boys to other sports because of the later starting time, the control over the boy in the summer is limited, seniors will be eligible to play, but will they, with college expenses facing them, many will want to work. A loss of 25 to 30 games from the spring schedule, will the schools cut back on the budget, the question of freshmen and sophomore baseball as for starting and finishing is questionable. With the weather conditions the past two weeks, Option II is going to be given serious consideration, but before anything final is set, school officials will have the final Arote. We here at McHenry do not participate in the summer baseball program as other suburban schools. First we are too far away, why should Barrington come to McHenry to play, when they can schedule ten to twenty games in the Paiatine and Arlington areas. Second we at McHenry would have to do a lot of traveling because of our location, most of the schools would be in the Arlington area that we would play. Because of a school activity busses would be used. This would mean considerable expense to the school for travel. Another factor to be considered for Option II would all the coaches be willing to give up half of their summer vacation to coach baseball. As an avid golfer, you know which way I am going to vote. This season has been an exceptional one, when can you remember, McHenry not playing their opening game at home? The National Federation of High Schools has recently completed a Sports Participation Survey. Both boys and girls athletics have increased by over 800,000 since 1973. The survey also mentions the number of girl participants, due to the increase in the sport activities for Girls Athletics. The survey cannot explain the surge in boys participating in some form of athletics by over 300,000, a 200,000 increase since 1973. They do think that competitive athletics continues to be attractive to both high school boys and girls. So no matter what some people think, athletics are still important to a good percentage of our high school students. More honors to the McHenry Warrior basketball team. Marty Zeller senior forward was picked on the W.K.R.g. all Area Team, and teammates Steve Koerber and Kenne Ludwig were given Special Mention honors. For a team that was supposed to be fair to middling, I'll stick my neck out and pick Coach Ken Ludwig as the Coach of the Year. He made a believer out of twenty-three teams, and not many coaches in the state can make the same statement Its seems that I am always missinga boy's name here and there. This time I goofed on Andy Oakley fine junior distance runner on Coach Wally Scott's McHenry High track team. Andy is a miler and two miler, and is expected to contribute great things to the Warrior track squad this season. All Warrior fans wave your arms and get rid of the snow. Our spring sport schedule is way behind, and we don't want to finish over the 4th of July. motoring public, the slow moving vehicle. Farmers moving machinery from field to field and highway crews operating road building and maintenance equipment travel at speeds far less than cars and trucks. To help reduce this hazard, motorists should be alert for the SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblem. The SMV is required on all farm tractors and implements of husbandry, special mobile equipment and, yes, even animal drawn vehicles when used on any public road in Illinois. Captain Herald D. Crockett, Illinois State Police District commander at Elgin, said, "The emblem, composed of a fluorescent yellow-orange triangle, with a dark red reflective border, is to be mounted with the point up, and must be from 4 to 12 feet above the road surface. Troopers have found the emblem on mailbox posts, fence gates and as driveway markers." aiiiiiiiiiiiiTiiHiiiiiuimiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniTiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiu: FOR WOMEN | ...SHAGS § ...NATURALS | ...LAYER CUTS | You CAN Tell | The Difference _ E STYLING FOR MEN By Appointment E = 3317 W.
