DIVOT '! DOLLS V M.C.C. s. i) On The Sidelines With Cicfc Rabbitt What a weekend of sports for McHenry high athletes. Grr?y s tennis scIuad finished fourth in the North Chicago.District Meet. With the tough competition «r*r?um ' local netters did themselves a fine job. waP * exPerience these boys gained during the season, look out for next year. Could be some of the local lads will 2T ? the sta.te finals-There is already talk that some ot the lads are going to ente$tournaments in the area this summer. With this kind of desire, one can sure see an upswing in the tennis program at M.C.H.S. „ Coauch Wally Scott's boys had a busy time of it also. Finishing fourth in the North Suburban may have been a t of a disappointment, but remember the Warriors were running hurt at this meet. With the caliber of competition, it was indeed a goodtafternoon. - With some of the boys back in the saddle, they wasted no time in winning the McHenry County Meet for the second . sfraight year on Tuesday night. They really spread eagled the field in this meet. Scoring a 110 points and more 5ian doubling the score on the Crystal Lake Tigers must bring pleasant smiles to the coaching staff. John Mclnerney really ran the mile as it should be run. His time of 4.28 is below state qualifying time, and he won the race by over 30 yards. Personally I wished he would have been challenged a bit more, because with the attitude of this fine young lad I believe he could haVe broken the county record of 4.24. Ev Klapperich running hard for the first time this season after a pulled hamstring Won the hundred in the fine time of 10.5. Remember these races were run at night under the lights, and the weather was a bit cool, so times were a bit slower than if run during the warm sunlight hours. Brian Nuss really flew over the 330 yd low hurdles, and jumped over twenty feet to win the long jump. Tim Talbot ran a fine 880 to nip Kusliek of Woodstock at the wire. And it seems that George Hansen and Scott Freund have a thing going as they competed for first place irt the pole vault for the umpteenth time. All in all it was a good county meet, and a lot of fans were present to watch the events. Coach Ken Swanson is wearing a big smile on his face after the Warriors broke a jinx and won his first district title in seven years. Tuesday night they came from behind to defeat Lake Zurich 10 to 9 in a wild one. The Warriors are for real this season. With 16 wins ^under their belt, they are shooting for a 20 game win I season. The way this team hits is something to behold. * McCafferty, Ludwig, Wickenkamp, Christy and Jaskowiak are all hitting over 350, with McCafferty and | Ludwig over 400 for the season. | * • These guys come off the bench swinging a bat, and the | opponents better watch out. The genial coach never plays the same lineup twice in succession, so you know he has some bench strength to go along with his regulars. Coaches Gary Collins and Dan Boland sophomore track team are undefeated in dual meets this season. Their record at the present is 12 and 0 with only one meet with Crystal Lake and Woodstock remaining on the schedule. These coaches do a fine job with the younger lads, the frosh took third place last week in the Mustang relays, and the frosh-soph took second behind Crystal Lake in the County Meet. It looks as if Warrior Power in track will continue for at least the next several years. Yes indeed, it was a great weekend for athletics at McHenry high school. Now if we can get some boys down to the state finals at Charleston, it will be indeed a super track season. Here is wishing Coaches Swanson and his Warriors, and Wally Scott and his thinclads the best of luck this coming weekend. We know you will give it all you got. The opening round of ABC Team Low Net tournament brought forth some truly fine golfing by the gals and many were the smiles that wreathed their faces. First place team with a low net of 230 was made up of Laverne Harpling 102-77; Maizie Stamer 111-79; . Ethel Koehler 110-74. Second Place Team with a low net of 245 had Judy Smithson 101-84; Barb Weber 109-78; Esther Jemiola 129-83. Third Place team with a low net of 247 consisted of Joan Buss 102-82; Emily Hester 107- 79; Faye Stuart 132-86. After chipping in from several yards out for a birdie on number 6, Carol Cooney turned in a nice round of 91 for a net 78. However, it wasn't quite good enough to secure first place for low net in Class A. Millie Leisten did her two better by carding a 99 for low net of 76. Nice golfing, both you gals. In Class B Laverne Harpling earned herself the honor of low net by shooting 102 for a net 77, followed by Emily Hester and Barb Weber who tied for net 78 each. In Class C Ethel Koehler captured low net with 74, followed by Esther Jemiola at low net of 83. It may or may not be a local record but out on the greens Joanie Buss did some remarkable putting to turn in only 24 putts for the 18 hole event - One reason she's strictly a class A golfer In Class B we had a tie for low putting bet ween Charlotte Zwissler and Emily Hester with each of them stroking their putters only 32 times. And in Class C Evie Guntner showed some mighty Review Pt Programs A review of the Physical Education curriculum at the two McHenry high schools was presented by Ken Swanson and Ken Ludwig, department coordinators at West and East campuses, respectively, to the District 156 board of education last week. It was the monthly instructional meeting of the board. Ludwig distributed a policy booklet from East, where 540 girls and 640 boys are engaged in the Physical Education programs. The coordinator pointed to a lack of facilities at East, and said more time is needed. At present, students participate in a class of fifty-two minutes duration, every other day. Ludwig said he would like to have freshmen and sophomores take advantage of West campus facilities, such as swimming pool and tennis courts. However, he recognized that transportation created a problem. Swanson said the P.E. program is much the same at West campus, with the ex ception of the addition of swimming. The coaches noted that Physical Education is taught nights and in Summer School, and it is possible to use these offerings to make up credits. One-quarter of a credit is earned each year in P.E. and it is necessary to pass four years The McHenry netters pushed their dual meet record to 10 wins and six losses with a pair of 5 to 0 wins last week. Terry Reilly in the number one singles won a pair of im pressive victories. Greg Worm at number two notched two wins, as did Jeff Boyer in the number three spot. All organization and planning is again being con ducted by the Fathers' club for this affair that will honor the fine class by taking only 28 putts. All in all, it was a great golfing day for the gals, and, needless to say, they're looking forward to the finishing round of ABC next Tuesday. Following golf and lunch a group of "green thumbers" On Two ( of Physical Education to meet graduation requirements. The board acted favorably on requests to provide student travel to participate in in terscholastic competition in areas other than athletics. At a cost of some over $300, a Data Processing student will be traveling to Florida to take part in competition, and Science Fair students will advance to the state contest. After some discussion, the board agreed to study several solutions to a difficulty with the West campus air conditioning system.
