BANK NOTES Q. BY DONALD DALEY PRESIDENT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY MONEY MOVES A CAPITAL Did you know that money was at the root of the cir cumstances involved in re locating our national capit al, from Philadelphia to Virginia? In those turbulent years during the War of Indep endence and in the criti cal years following, Phil adelphia was our national capital ( except for 8 mon ths of British occupation 1777-78). The "City of Brotherly Love" continued as the capital until 1800, encompassing the moment ous period that saw the Constitution drawn up ( 1787 ), the Constitution ratified (1788), the New Republic and George Wash ington inaugurated (April 30, 1789). While there were many, the new central governm ent's most vexing problem was to establish a national monetary system that would solidify the credit of the UnitedStates. A crit ical element in such an ob jective was to resolve the question of redeeming the valueless Continental Cur rency and assuming the debts of the thirteen states. Alexander Hamilton (Sec retary of Treasury) was ad amantly in favor of the Fed eral government assuming these debts and redeeming the worthless currencies.. Thomas Jefferson was st rongly opposed. Compro mise was the answer...in return for Jefferson's ag reement to a program of governmental redemption of the currencies, Hamil ton put his powerful sup port behind a plan to move the capital to Virginia (on the banks of the Pot omac), making Jefferson j and his fellow Southerners very happy. Money had moved a capital. George Washington picked the site, Virginia donating some land on one side and Maryland a like amount on the other side of the Potomac. By Congres sional action in 1791, the 70 square miles that is Washington D.C. was born. The White House was under construction in 1792, the Capitol in 1793. Congress held its' first session in its' new home in 1800. Whether you are interested in saving money...or bor rowing you'I find FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY most accommodating!
