PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 1975 County Defenders In Kunde Woods Nature Day Sunny skies and mild tem peratures combined to make the Defenders' outing at Kunde woods, north of Marengo, a real success. The activities started Saturday night with an Owl Hoot at dusk. Led by Steve Peck and Tom Thurow, students at the university majoring in biology and wildlife, the Hoot was a real experience. After walking into the woods, tapes of owl calls were played, while a group of twenty-five wide-eyed enthusiasts scanned the darkening sky in silence. A number of owls were heard answering the calls and two Screen Owls flew to nearby branches and blinked back at the group. The elusive Great Horned Owl swooped over for a brief appearance. A number of the group spent the night camping at the Conservation district area and HURRY HURRY HURRY! SAVE BIG! GOODWYEAR TENT SALE woke early to the calls of Whippoorwill, Wood Thrush, Cardinal, Meadowlark, and others. A Bird walk was led by Andrea Kane-Qefender and Audubon member. Interesting facts regarding behavior and habits of various bird species were shared. Later in the morning a Flower walk was led by Lela Boerner, also a member of Defenders and Audubon. The forest and meadow provided a wealth of wild flowers and plant specimens, and Mrs, Boerner provided answers to countless questions. Lunch offered a break in the activities and a chance for members and guests to mingle. A number of guests arrived from Woodstock, Marengo and McHenry as well as other parts of the county. The final walk was led by Bill and Alice Howenstine of McHenry and climaxed a perfect day. The Howenstines made a perfect team for such an outing. As president of the board of trustees of the McHenry County Conservation district, Dr. Howenstine is* familiar with the history of the area. He related the -glacial events responsible for the terrain and briefed the group on the plant and animal life of the area. Mrs. Howenstine pointed out countless plant types and related interesting information about ancient uses of many. The group was unable to stump these two experts with questions. Those who participated in the walks returned with a wealth of information to take home with them. The McHenry county Defenders is an environmental group dedicated to educating and acting in the preservation and improvement of the en vironment. College Participates In Country Art Fair Joe Rybacek and an Art itadent ai McHenry County Junior college prepare for their exhibit in the McHenry Country Art Fair. Joseph. Rybacek is again bringing an excellent student exhibit to McHenry Country Art Fair from McHenry County college. In this special section of the show, students will exhibit examples of their work from this year's curriculum ranging from oils and ceramics to photography. Last year's display brought many com ments as to the high quality of work produced there. In another section of the show, student work from the county grade and high schools will be featured, with exhibitor's ribbons and a Best High School Student award of $10 being presented. A third section of the show will feature photography, both mature and professional, KnowS ± SlMi As the days continue to get warmer, we can expect more electrical clouds and storms. Do you remember the lightning count? Does it really tell you how far away the lightning bolt was? When you see a bolt of lightning and do not hear thunder, begin a second- count and note the number of seconds until you hear the thunder. Divide this number by five and you have the dis tance of the lightning. This is an infallible rule and is based on the knowl edge that sound travels only a fifth of a mile per second. Therefore it takes five sec onds for the sound to travel a mile, even though you im mediately see the flash, even at some distance. Lightning seen in the west is most dangerous (in the north temperate zone) for it is probably heading toward you. Human progress is often impeded by the anxiety of human beings to get credit for themselves. color and black and white. The viewing public is asked not to miss any of the sections of this showcase of county art work. The new Parkland location allows easy viewing of the full show and a special map awaits everyone in the lobby to show where the judged section, Junior college, student show, photo show, One-Man-show and the gymnasium sales are displayed. Tickets are available at the door on June 20, 21 and 22. Proceeds benefit the auxiliary to McHenry hospital, sponsor of this annual event. Deaths TILLIE COOPER Mrs. Tillie Cooper, 81, of 6620 W.
