BASEBALL * * * By Pete f rite hie LAKELAND, FLA.-The Detroit Tigers finished last in their eastern A.L. divi sion last year but came up with perhaps the most ex citing new ballplayer in the league--Ron LaFlore. This is the crucial year for LaFlore. This is the year he'll come through on his way to becoming a su- pejfStar or ease off from a sensational rookie year and great promise to become either an average ballplayer or suffer another fate. LaFlore is the most ex citing Tiger baserunner since Cobb. He won games in spring training with dar ing speed. He also packs power and swats the ball over the centerfielder's head or out the park quite fre quently. He's the most exciting Tiger cub in the kennel but there are other young sters manager Ralph Houk thinks look good--outfield ers Dan Meyer and Leon Roberts (both up last year for a trial) primarily. The hope of the Bengals to rise from the cellar rests on pitching. Unless Lerrin LaGrow and one or two oth ers (perhaps Fred Holds- worth, Dave Lemanczyk, Vern Ruhle, Tom Walker or Tom Makowski) come through big to help Joe Coleman and Mickey Lolich --and they must have good years--that hope is limited. 4-H Club Assists In Saturday Recycling Some Local Beaches Unsatisfactory To Swim The McHenry County Defenders and the McLakewood 4-H club are working together to sponsor this month's third Saturday recycling program, which will be June 21. Bring tied bundles of paper and magazines (remove all plastic bags), cans (clean and flattened and with paper labels removed), and clean bottles and jars (with all metal removed) to the Market Place parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday. Workers will be there to help unload cars and get the materials properly stored for the next step on the way to being recycled. Flyers will be available for those who have not yet received them, giving more details as tol the preparation of recyclable material and what happens to it once it leaves the McHenry Market Place parking lot. Cooperation with the recyclers is asked by typing paper, flattening cans and removing all metal and plastic from bottles. This includes the sometimes difficult to remove metal rim that remains on the neck of some wine bottles. It is imppssible for all of this to be done by the workers on the day of the drive. Some of the glass loads have been rejected in the past because all the metal rims have not been caught and removed. If there are any questions regarding this month's recycling drive, call the McHenry County Defenders representative at 385-8512 or the McLakewood 4-H representative at 385-3515. Water samples collected from swimming beaches by the McHenry County Department of Health June 9 and June 10, were obtained from several beaches on the Fox river and from some of the lakes in the county. Those beaches at which the water was found to be un satisfactory for swimming included Indian Ridge, Porten subdivision, Riverside Park, Fox river, city of McHenry, Deep Springs No. 2, McCullom Lake and Lakeland Park No. 1. Local beaches at which there has been two consecutive un satisfactory samples were McCullom Lake, Portens subdivision, city of McHenry and Riverside Park. The Department recom mends that persons refrain from swimming for two to three days following a heavy rain.
