(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) "EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR--I Just watched the All-Star baseball game and am not in a joyous mood to write a column. We can't believe it! Those big, bad National Leaguers beat our American boys 6 to 3. The only thing we can think of is to have those bad boys play our entire White Sox team next year. We'll show 'em! Seriously -- while we grant it is just as fair for one team as the other, some changes might help the game as a whole. Many players would rather have a three day rest than play "I should've took that good deal on tires at JERRY'S." JERRY'S'W AUTO REPAIR 4713 W. Some managers use their star pitchers on Sunday and they are not ready for a Tuesday game. If the leagues went back to a 154 game schedule, they could allow an extra day in the break for the big game, thus giving the pitchers a chance to recover. As previously stated, we think the players should pick the teams. With the fans casting ballots, the teams drawing big crowds can pile up a flock of votes for their town favorites. Too many top players are skipped over without a chance. And, who decides what names should go on the ballots? Every team should be represented even if the players didn't make the proper spread in their selections. That could be worked out. So. That's What's yours? our opinion. A tramp knocked at the door of a Portland house, and a smiling Chinaman appeared. "Say, John," croaked the tramp, "give me some grub. I'm starving." "Like fish?" asked the Chinaman, with his bland smile. "Betcher s\to,eet life, I like fish," said the tramp eagerly. "Call Fliday," said the Chinaman and smiling more blandly than ever, he shut the door. We have a flock of sports pictures for the Plaindealer Centennial issue. No way can we use all of them. Some cannot be reproduced to make them clear even if we had room. So--we have talked it over with Foreman Dick and decided we will run some of those old time pictures throughout the coming jnonths in regular issues. Ethel Blake reports that the temperature is going up to 99 degrees. Wow! We don't hit that when the nurse puts a thermometer under our tongue. Don't know what day that 99 is coming, but we won't be working in our garden that day. Another worry. The hottest day of the summer is when air conditioners conk out. "Just where did the automobile hit you?" asked the magistrate. "Well," said the injured young lady, "If I had been wearing a license plate it would have been pretty badly damaged." HAPPINESS IS) -- The thrill of a lifetime came early to 15 year old Tom Pepping, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pepping, on Tuesday when he shot a hole-in-one on No. 9 at McHenry Country Club. Tom used a 6 iron on the 165 yard hole to sink his shot. He Entry blanks are now being accepted at the fair office in Woodstock for participation in this year's Demolition Derby at the McHenry County Fair. Anyone wanting to join in the excitement can obtain the official rules and entry form at any of the following places: Sonny's Sonoco on Business 20 in Garden Prairie; Gene Ballard Standard, Route 20 in Marengo; Ron Karsten's Standard, Route 23 and 176 in Crystal Lake; Skip Ahrens Clark on Business 14 in Woodstock and Woodstock Mobil on Lake Ave., in Woodstock. The Demolition Derby is set for 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 at the McHenry Cdunty Fair grand stand. The winner will be the one who can survive the automotive chaos. Cars will be smashed and crashed until all but ONE is totally demolished. Ambulances, wreckers and fire equipment will stand by in case of emergency. The Demolition Derby has been called "The Sports Event that is alive with Death." Because of the large number of cars expected, three heat races will precede the feature event. The last two running cars from each heat will then lock fenders for the Cham pionship. Only American-made, hardtop automobiles are eligible. No special bumpers or reinforcements will be per mitted. The only exception*are roll bars around the driver's compartment which will be permitted, but not required. Because of the nature of this event, no spectators will be permitted in the infield. Therefore, they are urged by officials to come early and get a choice seat in the grandstand. r i McHenry Area 12-Inch Softball i i i I By Pat Wirtz Old Bridge remains in first place all by themselves as they won two games over Wetteland Decorating. Scores were 13 to 3 and 12 to 5. House of David split with Swanson Chalet, winning 6-5 and losing^7-4. The loss drops them into a tie with Rusty Nail. S.p.A. kept their hopes alive for the playoffs as they whipped Phillips's 66 twice by scores of 10-8 and 8-5. The pair of losses is really going to hurt Phillip's 66 as they will be playing their final doubleheader versus Old Bridge this week. Two more losses could drop them into 5th place! For the "Bridge" Matt Oik had 3 hits as did Gary Connell. Connell also drove in two runs and scored 3 times. Pat McQueeney supplied the power with a 2 run homer and Steve Salter added a 3 run homerun. John Connell, Steve Major and Pete Smith each had 2 hits. For Wetteland only 5 hits were made during the game. Their first two runs were scoried on 2 walks, an error, another walk and a sacrifice. John Little's double and Gary Snell's single accounted for the other run. Standing: Old Bridge Rusty Nail House of David Phillip's 66 S P A .
