Naturally it was the fun­ ction of his office to id­ entify all military material with the mark of the United States, namely "U.S." The coincidfence of the government's identifi­ cation markings and the in- itals of "Uncle Sam" Wilson was as dramatic as it was obvious and it swept from a local situation to one of national recognition. Some forty years later this coincidental beginning of "Uncle Sam" was solid­ ified when a newspaper man (Frank Bellow) drew upon this "Uncle Sam" stoi create a cartoon satirizing" our government's position relative to a conspicuous conflict that was going on between United States and British shipowners. The women enjoyed a brief but pleasant flight from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin, Ireland. The greater part of the vacation time was spent in Southern Ireland visiting friends and driving around the_ countryside. The first night in Dublin, a friend came to visit the Henns at their hotel and plans were made for the following day. The women took a ride through some of the suburban areas of Dublin and then traveled on to Tara, which is the place where St. Patrick converted the High King of Ireland and so began his conversion of the Isle which later became known as the "Island of Saints and Scholars". During the same afternoon, the travelers visited New Grange, where they saw a cave where Mass was offered af the time of religious per­ secution. Another day, the women took a city tour visiting Trinity college, where they viewed the book of Kells, the Georgian area, St. Stephen's Green, O'Connell street, Graffon street and others^That evening, friends of the Ifenns, Marlene and Paddy Sullivan) treated the visitors to a fun everting at "Ye Olde Abbey Inn' in Howth, near Dublin The group traveled from the Dublin area to Cork by way of Kildare. While in Cork, they drove to the quaint seaside fishing village of Kinsale. From Cork they drove south to visit friends. Sue and Tony Daley, formerly of Southern California and Mount Prospect who retired to Schull three years ago. From Schull, the women drove to Killarney for a couple days of relaxation. Since Mrs. Henn's. parents were from Tralee and Limerick, these places were "musts" after leaving Killarney. While in the Limerick- Shannon area, the visitors joined a Medieval Castle tour which proved to be a real ad­ venture. complete with tea and scones at a thatched cottage, Irish coffee at a hotel in Ennis ending with a ̂ banquet and evening entertainment in true medieval style at Bunratty Castle « '* Several days later, the travelers boarded a plane for their return flight to O'Hare airport, where they were en­ thusiastically greeted by their family.
