STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD World War I Veterans In 18th Year As McHenry Barracks The first official meeting of McHenry Barracks No. 1315, Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., Inc., was held Feb. 17, 1958, at the American Legion Home on Green street. Buddy Clark Fickes, assistant chief of staff, opened the meeting and the following were elected as officers: Commander, Roy W. Kinsey; senior vice-commander, Ford Hanford; junior vice- commander, Julius J. Gruenfeld; judge advocate, Alford Pouse; quartermaster, George Knight; chaplain, Ray McGee; Trustee, 1-year, Lester Bacon; Trustee, 2 years, Richard Richardson, and trustee, 3 years, Casline Nacker. Lester R. Bacon was ap­ pointed Adjutant. At this meeting they had a list of eligible veterans of World War I in the McHenry area of about 125. However, the charter which was issued May 12, 1958, listed only the following: William H. Althoff, Lester R. Bacon, Paul F. Barbian, Bernard Bauer, Anton F. Blake, G.W. Kane, Roy W. Kinsey, George H. Knight, Robert E. Knox, Fred G. Kunz; Also, Ray McGee, Arthur Meyers, William Massey, Frank Marzahl, Caseline Nacker, Allen E. Noonan. Sr., Richard F. Cronin, Alfred H. The idea of starting an organization for Veterans of World War I started one cold October evening when about a dozen veterans of 1917-1918 met in the Qlmstead hotel in Cleveland, Ohio. Other World War I Veterans began to feel the same need as the Cleveland veterans, that World War I veterans were being forgotten in the rush to organize the younger men. With the ranks of the other organizations being filled with World War 2 and Korean veterans, there was a need for an organization of their own. Finally, in 1953, the demand for definite action could no longer be ignored, so, representatives from sixty widely scattered groups met in the old city of Baltimore, Md. This was the launching of the real organization. From this group of veterans who managed to acquire a total membership of 3,000 members at the first national meeting in 1953, by the end of 1962 they had developed into an organization of 225,000 members with a ladies auxiliary of 50,000 members.
