AUGUST 4. 1975 - PLAIN DEALER CENTENNIAL EDITION PAGE 17 George P. Freund and Ex- Mayor R.I. Overton. The new bridge, recently completed, is a pre-war project which was delayed until last fall because of material shortages and the fact that most workers on the home front were employed first in war work and later in conversion to peace-time necessities. As soon as products became available, however, it was decided to begin construction of the new bridge and widen the street because he&vy traffic at that point, especially during the summer season, made driving dangerous. The first bond issue approved by the public was for $50,000 and later, when it was found that more money would be needed, a $20,000 bond issue" was voted upon favorably. Bonds were sold to Ballman and Main of Chicago. • H.H. Mass of Algonquin was low bidder on the contract, his price being $83,569.25, covering both the bridge and widening of the street. Plans were drawn by V.H. Kasser, engineer of Elgin. Approximately $24,000 from the Motor Fuel tax is now credited to the City of McHenry by the state. This will be used to pay the balance of the bridge and to retire bonds. < Not every trash basket catches all the stuff that should be thrown into it.
