It was a hot day when Larry stopped by the house and Mrs. Hepburn said the ride was "great-nice and breezy!" Mrs. Hepburn is 84 years young. VACATION IN CANADA Sig and Ingeborg Jacobsen with John and Ila Hogan and grandsons, Tom and Mikie Hogan. recently returned from vacation. With Ila driving, they went up through International Falls to Conora, which was very rocky country, and then east to Winnepeg. Not until they got nearer to Winnepeg did they see any good farmland but then there were acres of wheat fields and beautiful cropland. In Regina, Saskatchewan, they found the streets buckling from the extreme heat this com munity was experiencing. Earlier in the season, this area had experienced their first flooding. The folks had to pay 90 cents a gallon for gas while in Canada. They then returned to the States and drove through Yellowstone Park and the Bad Lands before heading south into Iowa and back home. ABOUT TOWN The Leon Van Everys and Paul Walkingtons went cam ping up at Legend Lake. The boys had a great time fishing but the folks didn't plan on their catches to make the meals. Guess the big ones just weren't biting. Ralph and Beulah Kick with Charles and Dolores Brennan, went out for dinner to celebrate the Kicks' seventeenth wedding anniversary. Our best wishes for many more. Kenneth Brennan, with Wayne and Wendy, called at AMERICAN LEGION POST NO. 491 -- PRESENTS THEIR -- ANNUAL CARNIVAL 2505 RINGWOOD RD. They were Tom Kane of Hebron. Conn., and Ron Gelvin and his wife from Fairland, Okie?. It was nice to see them. The Art Baker family traveled to Strawberry Point, Iowa, this past weekend to see Art and Mary's mothers. Of course they were glad to see everyone but Bill was missing as he stayed home to keep the home fires burning. (In this hot weather) Speaking of weather Mary said it is getting awfully dry out that way and if they don't get some rain in the near future they will be hurting. So hope it rains for them now and us when we need it. Lee. Scott and Pattie Miller attended the Beatty picnic in Richmond. Patti and boys represented the Lows from here. Columnist Begs For News Items From Her Readers My column is getting shorter and shorter every week. I always wondered why the people who were writing for the paper gave up so soon. But it VA NEWS sure is disheartening to try to put something in the news when no one in the village seems to care. I know quite a few of you read the paper because people tell me so, and I'm sure some of you have been on vacations and have seen lots of interesting things. Please call and let me know. The new census count in the village was 471. We sure have more birthdays and an niversaries in the village than I have in my book, I can't print what I do not know. It seems a shame to run to McHenry just to print one or two little ar ticles. ANNIVERSARY We would like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Chester Crowley a very happy anniversary. They had their special day on the sixth. Many, many more. BIRTHDAYS A happy, happy birthday to Eric Heim on the third. Hope you had a nice day. Ellen Perschke celebrated her day on the fourth. Lots more to both of you. GET-WELL We want to wish Mary Piokop a speedy recovery from her surgery - come home soon, we all miss vou. EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their families are asking thousands of questions con cerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Ad ministration. Below are some representative queries. Ad ditional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q - I'm a 66-year-old veteran unable to work. Can I qualify for a disability pension from the Veterans administration? A - Probably. Laws gover ning VA pensions consider veterans 65 years old and older totally disabled and eligible for pension if they fall within in come limitations. Suggest you contact the agency. A --1 was discharged recently from military service and I plan to go to school under the GI Bill. How long do I have to complete my schooling? A -- Under a recent law (PL 93-337, July 10, 1974) veterans are allowed 10 instead of eight years from date of separation to finish schooling. Q -- My husband was drawing compensation from the Veterans administration for a 30 per cent disability when he died. Am I eligible for the agency's health care program, CHAMPVA? A - If your husband died as a result of his service-connected disability and you're not eligible for the military's CHAMPUS program or medicare, you may be eligible for CHAMPVA. Check with nearest VA hospital or clinic.
