HELPING PAWS How to go about arousing compassion in people for animals? Sometimes it seems hopeless. Those who have it can always be counted on to come to the rescue of an animal. But those who do not have it can be callous in the extreme. They may be -- often are ~ nice people in other respects. They are good to their families, people who go to church regularly, people who get along with their neighbors, but they have a blind spot where animals are concerned. The blind spot is just this -- because it is an animal it's not deser ving of the special kindness it needs. This attitude ignores the fact that the animal didn't ask to be born, but it's here. And that it has feelings, can be hurt, is at the mercy of man, and basically loves man. Par ticularly with a dog this is true. He'll take an awful lot from his owner and still come back wagging his tail and showing his joy to be with his owner. We were told of a family of good people who have a big dog. This big dog is shut up in a limited space in the garage most of the time, and exercise isn't possible. If the family is away over night or for several days and nights, the big dog is kept shut in the garage with water and food, but otherwise solitary. The joy of this dog when they give it a pat or a kind word or two on infrequent occasions, is almost touching. Yes, you can say this dog is better off than a pet that has been abandoned, and when found must take a chance on being adopted or destroyed. But what is heartbreaking is the deep devotion the dog has for its family, and the matter- of-fact attitude of the members of the family toward such a loyal pet. Besides a home and food, we hope you can give the pet you adopt some love and attention. And Helping Paws has a variety of animals for adoption. The Helping Paws office, phone 459-2641, is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10 to noon, and from 1 to 3. They do whatever they can to help with pet problems. Webb said increased mechanization, combined with less labor on a farm, requires much greater capitalization. The average loan last year totaled $70,000. So far in seven months this year, the loan average is $90,000. For the first seven months, through July 31, 1975, the FLBA of DeKalb-Woodstock has loaned $12,344,103. For all of 1974, the total was $12,962,786, an amount soon to be surpassed at the present pace, Webb said.
