Award Recognizes Mally For Service Leadership getting involved in, advises Nancy Moore, University of Illinois Extension home economist. Does the whole family routine shift because of one person, with the coach, club adviser, teacher, or someone else outside the family determining when you eat supper, when you do the grocery shopping, or when you do the laundry? Each of us must look at our own family and then consider the amount and reasons for children's outside-the-home involvement, Mrs. Moore says. Some parents tend to rate their personal success or popularity on the basis of their child's success or popularity in school activities. At the same time, however, they resent the time son or daughter is away fi'om home with the implication that the family is no longer im portant. Help you child evaluate and select from the many possible after-school activities by weighing the pros and cons. But always let him feel that he need not participate in everything-just those that mean the most to him--that coming home and being more a part of the family are also important. Martin Inflation, deflation and general economic conditions prevalent in the past couple of years have brought new situations to many families. And often they are not sure just how to handle what they are faced with. In the next few columns, I will be dealing with one par ticular situation confronting many families-the addition of nutmeg seed. Its aroma is similar n to nutmeg but the flavor is different. Mace is used mostly in flavoring baked goods and combines well with chocolate. Try a dash of mace in oyster stew, creamed eggs, cheese and cream sauces, and on top of whipped cream. Paprika is made by grinding the dry pods of a kind of red pepper. It has a bright red color and mild flavor, marking it especially suitable for gar nishing foods. It is used in meat processing and in many con diments including catsup and chili sauce. Many dishes from Hungary, where the best paprika is grown, owe their elegant flavor to this spice. Chili powder is a blend of chili peppers, onion, cumin seed, garlic, oregano, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and caraway seeds. a second income when, both spouses are working. Once the decision has been made for the second spouse to take on a job, there is often a tendency to assume that their take-home pay will all be "extra" money. Before you are lulled into a false feeling of security or wealth, consider what the hidden costs of a second bread winner can be. First, consider the expenses necessary just to keep the job. A new wardrobe necessary for a continuing job can cost several hundred dollars. Also consider the 'cost of tran sportation. Even charges for mass transit or car pooling can add up, but if a second car becomes necessary, will the job still be worth it? Many families also find that with both adults working, more money is spent on time-saving convenience meals, or still more expensive, eating out. Once you add these extras up, you'll know how much added income you'll really have to work with. And that's when your long range planning can begin.
