PAGE 20 - PLAINDEALER-WFnNFRnAV OCTOBER a. 1975 Voyageurs Participate In tonservation Area Opening The public is invited to attend and participate in the opening of the Hickory Grove-Fox River frontage and Hickory Grove Highland Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. The highlight of the dedication will be a rendezvous of Brigade Voyageurs. The true opening of the regions of Canada and North America was made by ad venturous, rugged explorers using birch bark canoes. The waterways they traveled became Voyageur Highways. History fails to give these Voyageurs proper recognition, for long before the first covered wagon left the east coast for Illinois and McHenry county, the Voyageurs had established a frontier in the Illinois country. the Voyageur obtained his high degree of individuality and importance during the period between 1763 and 1840. The 1840 date is of significance because it was at that time Hickory Grove was acquired by the Crabtree family. The Voyageurs will land at Hickory Grove Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. for a Bicentennial opening of McHenry County Conservation district's newest conservation area. The rendezvous on the Fox river frontage just north of Cary on Hickory Grove road will involve the Elgin Brigade of Voyageurs. This Scout Explorer post will represent the United States in the Bicentennial great ren dezvous reenactment with the Canadian Voyageurs at Thunder Bay, Ontario July 4, 1976. The Hickory Grove rendezvous is part of the eighteen-month training program which has been established in preparation for this challenging expedition which has been carried out using local waterways such as the Fox river and Lake Michigan. The rendezvous will faithfully recreate equipment, food, dress, custom and songs depicting this bygone era of 135 years ago. Keeping in rhythm to the resounding strains of songs and chants will be the flashing paddles of 60 Voyageurs skillfully handling their two 34-foot Montreal type and 26-foot birch bark style canoes. Their clothing is colorful: bright shirts snugged in at the waist with a fringe sash from which hangs tobacco and a clay pipe, and brightly colored wool caps worn at a jaunty angle. Welcoming the Voyageurs to McHenry county will be the Bicentennial commission in full costume. A short dedication program will precede demonstrations of the various Voyageurs' skills. Explorer Scout Post No. 986 will have rendezvous vittles available for purchase by those in attendance.
