Must be she grew up all of a sudden. It wasn't even a good night for ducks, but the football game at McCracken Field went on as scheduled Friday night. The storm and lightning caused the first game to be called before it was finished. The varsity boys were simply outmatched with the fast Lake Forest team. First they swept our right end, then the left. Then came passes, line thrusts, quarterback keepers, draw plays and what not. They had the horses One bright spot in the Warrior offense was the run ning of Brian Nuss. He's not big as football players go, but stacks up with the best. Pound for pound, he's a lotta man. On one run, they said Brian ran 86 yards for a touchdown. He was trapped on one side of the field, then reversed his field and outran the pack. A couple of good blocks helped the cause. As we saw it, Brian must have run about 130 yards in that great effort. The press box was bulging at the seams as everybody wanted to get under cover. That was the last home football game of the season. Gary Collins, a great weight lifter, hoisted us through the trap door for the last time this year. He can rest now and build up his strength for the *76 season. The Warriors travel to Zion Saturday afternoon to close out a season that has had some bright spots mixed with some games that are best forgotten. Couldn't see anyting wrong with the players desire and effort. Let's face it. The North Suburban »<= a tough league. Some of the teams outclassed the field. But, that is true in the Big Ten, pro ranks and most conferences. By Dick Rabbitt In a game delayed by lightning, the Lake Forest Scouts defeated the McHenry High Warriors 35 to 12 last Friday night at McCracken Field. Indeed it was not a good night for football, and those brave fans must be com mended who stayed around to the finish.-- The Warriors kicked off to the Scouts 30 yard line. Nigro and Hillard each picked up a first down, putting the ball on the Warrior 43. The defense dug in and took over on the 34. Each team exchanged punts, the Scouts took over on the Warrior 45. Bussone picked up 5, and then threw a halfback pass to Cowan good for 38 yds. putting the ball on the 2. Trkla went in for the T.D. and Mayo kicked the first of 5 extra points and at 3:46 the Warriors trailed 7 to 0. Again after the kickoff the Warriors were held, and forced to kick. After a Scout first down, the defense again dug in and forced a kick as the period ended. Nuss picked up 13 yds. to the Warrior 34. Then the senior halfback started to the left and when he ran out of running room, reversed his field and with a wall of black shirts knocking down Scouts raced into the end zone 66 yards away. There were 3 super blocks including Billy Hurckes block that gave Brian daylight to the endzone. Bucaro's kick was wide and the Warriors trailed 7 to 6 at 11:13 of the second period. After the ensuing kickoff the Scouts started a march, but were forced to punt, the wind aided kick going into the end zone. Minutes later Ludwig's punt was blocked on the Warrior 20. Two penalties later the ball was on the 40. Forcing a kick the Warriors took over on the 16. A Warrior fumble was recovered on the 7 by Lake Forest. Two plays later Nigro went in from the 3 and with the P.A.T. it was 14 to 6 Scouts. The Warriors took over on the 26, and three plays later on a bad snap from center the Scouts had the ball on the 35. Bussone ran to the 24, and a Warrior penalty put the ball on the 10. Bay Road (Rte. 134) Phone: 385-9854 remaining in the half Bussone went in from the 10 and the P.A.T. was good and the Warriors left the field at halftime trailing 21 to 6. Taking the, second half kickoff on their own 15 the Warriors went to work. Nuss and Ludwig brought the ball to the 38. Then Nuss on an end run simply outran his defenders for a 68 yd. jaunt for the T.D. The P.A.T. was no good and the Warriors trailed 21 to 12. On the first play after the Warrior kickoff Teskowski raced off tackle for Lake Forest on a 65 yard touchdown run. Mayo's kick was good and it was 28 to 12. The rest of the quarter was played in the mud as neither team could generate any long marches. At the opening of the final period the Scouts were at the Warrior 27. Using a new back- field the Scouts were on the march once again. Jeffery carried 6 times in a row going over for the T.D. from the 3 with 9:01 remaining in the game. The P.A.T. was good and it was 35 to 12. Midway in the period the Warriors recovered a Scout fumble on the Lake Forest 22, but two un sportsmanlike penalties set the ball on the 40 and ended the Warrior threat. The Scouts again started a march and as time ran out were on the Warrior's one foot line. Once again the Warriors were beaten by a better team. Lake Forest is playing the best ball in the North Suburban at the present time. The Warrior defense played almost the entire third quarter, and the toll was too much for them. The offense had one of their better nights. Although only socring twice in the slippery going, they racked up 222 yards on the ground. Brian Nuss had one of his best nights as a Warrior when he ran for 199 yards in 13 carries. Saturday the Warriors close out the season at Zion Benton. Marian Hurricanes Defeat Driscoll In Wild Finish 21 To 18 By Dick Rabbitt In as wild a finish as you will ever see, the Marian Hurricanes defeated Driscoll Saturday by the score of 21 to 18. Driscoll attempted a field goal with 2 seconds remaining on the clock. The kick was blocked and John O'Shea, a tackle, picked up the loose ball and rambled in for what seemed to be the winning touchdown. However, the of ficials did not signal for the T.D. and the Driscoll fans were in an uproar. After a con ference of the officials for about five minutes they ruled that O'Shea was pushed into the end zone after his knee hit on the 2 yard line. Thus the con- troversey. Marian scored first in the opening period when John Conerty went in from the 2. The kick was good and the "Canes'" led 7 to 0. In the second period John Legittino scored twice for Driscoll and they led 12 to 7. Early in third period Conerty ran 20 yds. for his second score of the game, and Dan Knox went off tackle for the 2 point conversion and Marian led 15 to 7. With 10 minutes remaining in the game Bill Rankin ran around end for 25 yards for the third Marian T.D. and they led 21 to 12. Legittino took the Marian kickoff back 85 yards for the T.D. and Driscoll trailed 21 to 18. Marian took the kick on their own 12, and keeping the ball on tne ground ate up 7 minutes of the clock. Coach Parker commented that "the offensive line played just super football in those 7 minutes." However, they were forced to give up the football, took it back again; and gave it back to Driscoll with 50 seconds remaining. After the five minute conference after the game, they were declared the winners. It was a nice win for Tom Parker and his fine squad. Wins don't come too frequent, so you take then anyway you can get them. Golf Balls The original golf ball was made of leather and stuffed with boiled goose feathers that fell apart in rain The Rev Robert A Patter son invented the gutta ball in 1845 It was made from gutta per- cha. a latex from trees, and bouncy like rubber Then came the bouncing billies, in 1899. rub ber balls that could bound 25 yards farther than the guttajaail. and which, in time, were retyped into the balls used today.
