Corn yield studies show that fall-applied nitrogen is somewhat less effective than nitrogen applied in the Spring, says George Young, McHenry county Extension adviser. However, applying nitrogen in the fall can reduce field work during the critical planting season and nitrogen is available now, but the supply situation for next spring is uncertain. When nitrogen is applied in the fall, losses can be held to a minimum by carefully con sidering soil conditions and field slopes. To minimize nutrient loss, Young recom mends the following guidelines: - Apply nitrogen in the ammonium form. It is held on the soil particles, while nitrate isn't. Thus, ammonium is less subject to loss by leaching or denitrification. - Apply ammonium forms when the soil temperature at the four-inch level drops below 50 degrees F. cooler tem peratures slow the action of soil micro-organisms which con-, vert ammonium to nitrate and thus increase the likelihood of loss. - Avoid fall nitrogen ap plications on sandy soils because they are subject to rapid water movement. This situation increases the chances of leaching. - Avoid fall application on poorly drained soils. Denitrification may result when these soils become water- saturated in the spring after ammonium has converted to nitrate. P. Freund, Inc. Larry Swaim 4102 W. CRYSTAL LAKE ROAD McHENRY 0420 By Larry Swaim WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? Dear Mr. Swaim, exactly what is the gospel? I hear preachers often say. we should preach the gospel. What all is in volved? The gospel is the "good news" of Jesus Christ; that He lived a perfect life, was willing to die for or.r sins and that He was raised from the dead. This is the essence and the heart of the gospel. The Apostle Paul said, "I am not ashamed of the gos pel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation unto everyone that believeth" [Romans 1:16]. The gospel is the power of God that takes a thief and makes him an honest man, or can take a murderer and change him in to a man whose heart is filled with love. The gospel is the power of God that can take a fallen woman, lift her up and make her as pure as an angel. The gospel is the pow er of God to change a drunk ard into a sober man. The gospel is truly the most pow erful energy at work in our world today. After nineteen hundred years, it has lost none of its ancient power. It is as much today "the power of God unto salvation" as when it was first preached. It needs no pity, no help, no handmaid; it can overcome all obstacles and break down every barrier. Sin is no hin drance, for even in the depths of degradation, the gospel thrives. The gospel works anywhere and everywhere. It has been declared on every continent of the earth, under every possible social and eco nomic condition and has al ways produced the same fruit: good, faithful, dedicated Chris tians. It dispels darkness, de livers from bondage and sets captives free. It gives libera tion and peace. Every fact, detail and com mand of the New Testament is a part of the gospel of Christ and should be shared with people everywhere. Mmrttm This time of year, much time is spent sprucing up the yard. And many people use' power tools to help with the work. But you must pay for the added convenience with extra caution. Hedge trimmers can cause serious injury, and the ac cidents always seem to happen when the operator becomes careless. The foremost rule is this: Keep both hands on the trim mer at all times. Many ac cidents happen when the operator uses one hand to hold a branch out of the way of the blade. Here are a few other rules to remember: Don't pull the trimmer through a hedge by the cord. It could accidently be switched on and cut you. Don't stand on an unstable chair or table while cutting high branches. Use a sturdy ladder, preferably with someone holding on to it. Don't use the trimmer long enough so that you become tired Or careless. Always unplug the trimmer before cleaning. Also, a word of caution about electrical cords. Make sure your extension cord is the same gauge and type as the trim mer's cord. Also make sure the plug and socket fit snugly together and won't come apart. And check the insulation frequently for cuts and breaks. Readers' questions are welcome and should be sent to P.O. Box 2210, Newport Beach, CA 92663.
