BANK N0TE$ BY DONALD DALEY PRESIDENT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY, This unusual name id entifies what it sounds like it would*..a coin that port rayed a hog on its' face design. On its'reverse side there was the design of a four masted ship. The coin emanated from the Somers Islands, 600 miles south east of North Carolina ••• today it is called Bermuda. Juan Bermudez, a Spanish explorer, discovered the islands in 1515 but he and his expedition stayed only a brief time, leaving behind a small flock of pigs. Ninety-four years later in 1609, under the leadership of Sir George Somers, a group of English settlers bound for the two year old •colony of Virginia were shipwrecked offshore from these islands. Within three years a successful colony had developed and by 1616 the settlement had designed "HOGGE MONEY" and obtained its' very own coin (probably produced by a metalsmith in England). By this time those pigs that had been left behind some 90 years before had mult iplied to where wild pigs practically overran the is land so the use of a pig's image on the coin is not too hard to understand. Interesting too is the fact that this "hogge" coin may be considered the very first to be issued by an American colony beacuse in those early days of English col onization of America, the Somers Islands were cl aimed as a part of the Virginia Colony and the coin, being issued in 1616, would predate the coin otherwise regarded as the first in the American col- onies....those of Massa chusetts, issued in 1652.
