This very old joke has probably been around as long as flu has, but even today it illustrates, with good humor, how easy it is to catch the "flu bug." Chances are that, before the winter is over, you, or someone you know, will have the flu. State public health officials say they anticipate the possibility of flu caused by one or more of several types of influenza virus in Illinois this winter, including Port Chalmers, Scotland and Hong Kong strains. Hong Kong flu,-a Type B strain, has been around for several years now; and there was some Port Chalmers flu reported in Illinois last winter. The Scotland strain, however, hasn't been seen in Illinois before. Like Port Chalmers, Scotland flu is a Type A strain which is more likely to cause community outbreaks than is the Type B. Symptoms of Type A flu include sudden onset of fever with shaking chills; headache, which may be generalized or behind the eyes; and "ache-all- over" feeling, including low back ache. Loss of appetite and nausea are also cdmmon symptoms, but vomiting is not typical. Runny nose, sneezing, coughing and a dry or somewhat sore throat are other common symptoms. According to state health officials, the only "cure" is bedrest, aspirin to relieve the aches and pains and plenty of fluids. Health officials also advise that flu shots are not necessary for those who are under 65 and in good health. When people under 65 who are otherwise in good health contract the flu, the illness is generally short-lived, and in a week or so, health is restored in uncomplicated cases. But, persons over 65...or persons who have chronic diseases, especially diabetes or diseases which affect the heart, lung or kidney...are more susceptible to flu, and more likely to develop serjous complications from it. These persons are referred to as "high-risk" by health officials, and , in order to maintain the highest possible level of protection against flu, those in these "high-risk" groups should probably have flu shots every year. Another thing to remember about flu, is that antibiotics, such as penicillin, will not cure the illness. Antibiotics may be of use, however, in treating secondary infections which occasionally accompany in­ fluenza infections. The school is oriented to th£ preparation of farm returns, but will also include in­ formation that relates to all returns. Enrollees will study the 1975 Tax Reduction act, pension reform, and new developments,, in the federal and Illinois tax regulations. Her death upset me tremen­ dously because she experi­ enced such great pain the last few weeks of her life. Her pain was so intense that she qpked every day that the Lord would take her. Why was it necessary for her to suffer so? Our bodies are made sen­ sitive to pain so that we can know when illness does come. Were it\not for pain, we would not be able to protect ourselves from bums and other injuries. Pain is a warn­ ing system that something isn't right. Unfortunately, some people during their life­ time must experience more pain than others, but pain is not the Worst fate to befall any of us. Christians have hu­ man bodies just as non-Chris- tians do. They work the same way and thus, those who are Christians, must experience physical and emotional pain just as anyone else. Every Christian looks for­ ward to the day when the scripture will be fulfilled which say, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow or cry­ ing, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away" [Rev­ elation ZyA]. Those of* us who are/christians recognize that earthly suffering is only temporary and it is in no way to be compared with what God is preparing for us in the W future (II Corinthians 4:17). Although not necessarily indicative of mental disturbance, the following actions, or signs of trouble, can sometimes help you identify someone who needs help: Is this person acting differently than he usually does? Can you link this change in behavior to something that has happened recently? Any event, such as a death of a close relative, or even something positive, such as a job promotion, can trigger a harmful emotional reaction. Does he or she seem to be excessively withdrawn and depressed? Are hobbies, friends, and relatives suddenly ignored? Is there a feeling '.hat this person has begun to lose confidence in himself? Depressive illnesses have many symptoms similar to these. Does the individual complain of episodes of extreme, almost uncontrollable, anxiety? Is this anxiety unrelated to any normal concern? Anxiety that has no discernible cause is a sign of an emotional difficulty. Does the person become aggressive, rude, and abusive^ over minor incidents? Are there remarks about groups or individuals "out to get him?" Is there a change in the person's habits, such as eating, sleeping, or grooming? Has the individual suddenly stopped eating? Or has he or she started eating, or drinking, in a compulsive manner? Either excessive sleeplessness or too much sleeping can be indicators of problems. Any of these signals, if they continue for any length of time, may call for professional help. Fortunately, early identification of the underlying problems causing unusual behavior can often make these symptoms disappear.
