So say the spokesmen from Detroit and Milan and other car-making capitals throughout the world. But despite these dour reports, there is at least one manufacturer report­ ing record sales with fac­ tories working three shifts a day and a consuming public ready to gobble up its products just about as fast as they can be turned out. The company, Corgi, is an English one with main plants in Swansea, Wales. And at this writing, it is turning out more cars than all of Detroit com­ bined. Collector!* growing The cars are small ones, three to four inches long, and they are being bought by a growing army of col­ lectors mainly in the five to twelve year age bracket. They are pouring into the United States at the rate of tens of millions an­ nually. A famous New York toy store calls them "incredi­ ble" in detail and authen­ ticity, "Like looking at the real thing through the wrong end of a telescope." Research by Corgi puts the average owner's collec­ tion at 17 %ith the more serious buffs going into the hundreds and even thousands scaling upward according to the degree of his seriousness. Popular models Classy and sleek For­ mula 1 racing cars top the popularity lists. Design takes several months and men working in microscop­ ic tolerances put in up­ ward of 10,000 work hours before their production is started. Corgi buyers, the com­ pany has learned, are sticklers for accuracy and are quick to find mistakes. One time when it made a car with eleven slats on its radiator grill when it should have had twelve, the company received over two hundred letters from various parts of the globe pointing out the error.
