THE FISH FRIENDS IN SERVICE HERE First, let us acknowledge the tremendous response to our Thanksgiving requests! Baskets of staple food items, fresh vegetables and meat were delivered to forty-three families. A hearty handshake and a pat-on-the-back to each and every one of you who joined in this endeavor - the churches, various organizations, in dividuals, and all who helped in the physical preparations and deliveries. God bless you all. Now, of course, our sites are towards Christmas and helping Santa Claus. This year we will also be needing toys, games, coloring books, crayons, books, mittens, caps and scarfs, for all ages and sizes. These should be new or in very good condition, not necessarily expensive, but of interest to the various ages of children and to give them continued activity. The churches will be collecting toys and food, or money if you prefer, for the various families, 70 percent of whom have children, starting with notification in their bulletins this weekend. Toys and other items may be delivered to St. Patrick's and St. Mary's churches in McHenry and St. John's in Johnsburg; also inquire at your church. For any additional information or questions, please call FISH at 385-6182. If you prefer to Christmas wrap your gift, be sure to place a tag securely on the outside indicating' "Boy or Girl" and age group. Remember the Fish line, and should you know of some elderly or handicapped shut-in folks who would enjoy a telephone call every now and then, let us know. The days of winter are long and lonely, especially if your own friends cannot get to see you so often. Call FISH, 385-8020, or write Fish, Box 282, McHenry. M.G. Never leave small chil dren alone in a home--es pecially in a room with a fireplace or open-front heat er. When food boils over in the oven, sprinkle a little salt over the burned surface. This will stop smoke arid odor and aid in cleaning. For ease in serving guests, let guests serve themselves from your at tractive pots and casse roles arranged on the kitch en stove and cabinets. Be fore guests arrive set the table with everything but the plates. Continue watering your evergreens even though it is cooler. Ample water now will prevent yellowing of leaves in February. One of the newer hair styles this season reminds one of the "Dutch cut" which was popular years ago. Bangs are cut straight across the forehead and the hair length turns up under the ears. Poncho's continue to be popular and some of those used for cold weather are fashioned from blankets. For many Americans the joy of Christmas is dimmed by chronic alcoholism. At Salvation Army social service centers and alcohol rehabilitation clinics, men and women find fellowship, christian love and a chance to rebuild broken li' es. •••••••••••••••• Auxiliary Notes From V.F. Cold fronts move faster than warm fronts but they usually don't travel more than thirty or thirty-five miles an hour, eastward. Hie reason this comes in with a bang, and unex pectedly, quite often, is that they arrive on the sur- ace before they appear in the skies above. The lead ing edge of a cold front is found on the surface of the earth, and slants backward --in the direction from which it is coming. Therefore, because the cold front moves fast, and is windy, we feel and see its effects suddenly --in comparison with the warm front, which arrives over head first, moves slower and often brings less tur bulence. * • • * Work hard; play little; die early; your family will enjoy your insurance. • • • » Culture, when you boil it down, is the act of be ing unselfish some of the time. POETS CORNER QUiET TIME Every now and then I like to go off by myself and just think, Thinking Think. I think of love, I think of life, I contemplate the days, the hours, the minutes, the seconds. It's that time of day When life is just as you like it. And the whole world is vibrant. Alive, Wonderful. And it is the quiet time, When I'm all by myself, I find the true meaning of love, of life of you. -- Dave Linquist REMEMBER Remember, when you light the candles on the tree... when all the presents lay out on the table when your special dinner haiTbeen served... \ Remember, the small child \ in the stable.... When you reach out for the Christmas drink, and toast to one another.... Remember, a hungry, dying child Remember him, for he is your brother. When you dress yourself in a coat of shiny fur.... remember, the poor without warm clothing, they are around, everywhere.... If you do remember, to give and share with your brother who is cold, alone and without food... - then you will live the message of Christmas, and the child in the stable will bless you, for you are Good....
