I Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 6, 1938) The City Council decided Monday evening at the January meeting to rent a fire truck for the protection of rural districts. This truck will be used until such time as definite plans can be formulated for the purchase of a new outfit The city has been confronted with the very serious problems of whether or not the city fire truck should be allowed to leave the city limits, k is no secret that the heavy t^uck has been mired for several hours at a time when answering calls in the outlying districts, thus leaving the city without fire protection Dan Cupid lost a lot of ground in McHenry county since the new marriage law went into effect July 1, 1937. After recording a new all time record for licenses in one month.s^June with 178, a steady decline is noted during the remainder of the year The total licenses during the year was 546. This is 152 less than issued in11936. W E Dobyns, who with his family moved here recently to make his home in the Julius Keg place on Riverside drive, is now a certified Culbertson teacher and also a member of (he Culbertson National Studies The number of persons in Illinois who voluntarily registered as unemployed in the government census taken last Nov 16, was 459,743 ac cording to figures released today by John D Biggers, director of the census TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 8, 1953) Among McHenry s busiest people during 1952 (as every year) were the city's law en forcement officers In addition to the usual traffic violations they were also called upon for such other violations of the law as shoplifting and burglaries. Even searching for missing persons came within their realm It was announced this past week by County Clerk Raymond Woods that the state Finance department has set a new factor of 23 percent and a multiple of 4 3478 for the ex tension of taxes in the county. This is the first time the factor and multiple has been changed since the Butler act was passed six years ago The previous factor and multiple used were 24 per cent and 4 1667 The change will mean an increase in assessed valuation of property Work on extension of taxes has been started in Clerk Wood's office Walter Carey is one of seven G.E dealers in the northern Illinois area selected for record sales during last fall to receive an expense-free trip to Miami Beach, Fla. Mr. Carey and the other six dealers leave from the Chicago airport on Friday of this week and will spend ten days at the recently opened Algiers hotel The trip is being made possible by R. Cooper, Jr., Inc., of Chicago, which is observing its silver jubilee this year TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 12, 1968) By a vote of 17 to 11, the county board of supervisors voted in ' favor of the fairgrounds property as the location for the proposed new courthouse. The previous day, in a joint session with the Woodstock City Council, the latter explained its stand in favor of the Annex property and proposed purchases of nearby land The board of consolidated Grade School District 15 early this week released results of the recent survey made to determine the reasons for the defeat of the recent $2,000,000 bond issue which would have provided a new grade school in the community The biggest objection, with 165 negative repleis, concerned the twelfth and last statement on the survey sheet: "The people felt that this bond issue would result in too high of a tax in crease The annual door-to-door drive for United Cerebral Palsy in McHenry county is all set to kick off on Jan 14 with better than 300 volunteers in the McHenry area Firemen from the three McHenry companies braved the sub-zero temperatures of early Wednesday morning to fight a fire in a vacant home in the 2100 block of Orchard Beach drive.
