Ronald leap II HELPING PAWS i AMjUAl WF1FABF ASSOCIATION P.O. Bex 205 • Crystal Lair*. Illinois 60014 • /«!5) 459-2641 by E»t»ll» Atw»ll A happy ending to a sad "tail". "Jackie" and "Jill" pictured this week, are mighty lucky dogs. Last October a Helping Paws volunteer visited the Animal Control center in Woodstock and found these two sisters huddled together as one, on the floor of a cage. She took them from the center and immediately to a vet The veterinarian said they were in such terrible condition that he could only administer the distemper booster, but a complete exam was next to impossible So badly matted and full of parasites, external and internal, they had to be rushed to groomer Mary Ann Erickson, who found the only solution was a complete shaving From there she took them back to the vet where they stayed for three days to complete the examination Finally released to the Helping Paws volunteer, they were placed into her foster home. She found that they had at one time been used to sweaters, collars, good food and lots of love and attention What began with a lack of interest in living, turned out to be renewed hope for them In the two months that followed, their hair began to grow, their eyes filled with hope once again, they became adoptable This week their picture was to be in our column as available for adoption. This is no longer the case however. Monday afternoon a won derful loving couple came to adopt them and have the ideal home in which they will stay from here on in. We feel that if their story was known, it would have gone something like this. The first two years of their lives must have been spent with lots of love and good care. Probably stolen, the rest of their two years they were used for repetitive breeding-caged, and no doubt mistreated. Finally no longer of use, they were dumped on the side of the road and came to Animal control. This is not an unusual story we are sorry to say. We have tried for two months to find those original owners, but to no avail We wanted to share with you the story of their new beginniijg^as we also begin a nevr^ear. What better way to celebrate than this. We extend our best wishes to all of you for a rewarding 1978. China And Human Rights Despite President Carter's sweeping commitment to human rights on inauguration 1 day, his administration has - treated the subject with about as much "balance" as that old recipe foi* Horse & Rabbit Stew: one horse and one rabbit. Mr. Carter's human rights "specialists" have been so obsessed with First amend ment-type rights and "due process" that they have ignored rights that most of the world's population considers more fundamental, such as the right to live and work where one chooses and the right to keep the fruit of one's labor. The administration's preoccupation has led it to engage in non-stop scolding of several right-of-center governments long friendly with us, but has kept it from seeing any problems in highly regimented totalitarian societies. Oh, there has been an occasional barb thrown at the Kremlin, but only silence about the brutality in Cambodia, the repression in Vietnam, or the top-to-bottom regimentation of the huge population on the mainland of China. Doesn't Mince Words The AFL-CIO doesn't have the same trouble defining human rights as the White House does. A resolution coming out of its recent con vention in Los Angeles doesn't mince words. On the China issue it says: "The government of Peking should be regarded by the United States as a repressive dictatorship, and should not be considered the inheritor of the free people of the Republic of China on Taiwan." It added, "The United States must make it absolutely clear to the com munist dictators of the Soviet Union, (Red ) China, North Korea and Indochina that their imperialist designs and efforts will be resisted." George Meany and his colleagues have never made any secret of their belief that communism is a mortal threat to freedom Still, the strong wording of the resolution is significant, coming at a time when the Carter administration is actively nursing the hope that it can somehow secure peace and checkmate the Soviet Union by tossing Taiwan overboard in exchange for an embassy in Peking and some vague private statement by the Communist Chinese to let Taiwan go on about its business. At the same time, the American public remains suspicious of any quid pro quo with Peking. A recently released Gallup poll - taken just prior to Cyrus Vance's August trip to Peking - shows public opinion continuing to favor the establishment of formal relations with the mainland, at the same time favoring continued diplomatic relations with the Republic of China on Taiwan. But, possibly as a result of White House in decision, more Americans are saying they don't know what they want on the China issues, according to Gallup. In 1975, he recorded 61 percent favoring recognition of Peking The new survey shows a drop to 56 percent, with a corresponding rise in "don't know" answers. Those favoring continued relations with the R.O.C. drop from 70 to 64 percent, with a gain in "don't know," but, perhaps significantly, the number opposing continued R.O.C. recognition drops, too. Since Peking insists that the U.S. drop recognition of the R.O.C. before we can "nor malize" relations with the mainland, Gallup asked people if they were willing to pay this price. The 1975 percentage favoring withdrawal of R.O.C. recognition was 10, but drops this year to 8. Those saying we should not withdraw recognition also drops from 70 to 65 percent, still a heavy majority. The movement is again to the "don't know" column. The proposed 15 cent in crease in the Building Operation fund was over whelmingly defeated by a 2-1 margin, even greater than the 50 cent increase proposed in October. This obviously displays the fact that the voters of McHenry staunchly oppose any type of support for the Given the two immovable objects - Peking's insistence on derecognition of the R.O.C. and the R.O.C.'s determination to remain free and also to technically claim all of china - public opinion seems to be saying we should leave things as they rfre. The public also may be hinting at its own concerns about human rights. PAGE 5 - PI.AINDEALER district, even when the district ) desperately needs it. "Let me remind the tax payers of McHenry that the money being asked for by the high school district is not in any way going to be used to sub sidize new programs, con struction. or extra-curricular activities. The money is to be used only for the maintenance of the existing structures. This seems a reasonable request, especially when you consider that the present request is less than one-third of the district's original proposal, but the taxpayers of McHenry refuse to grant the district the money it needs to maintain its buildings "Why? High School District 156 provides good quality education to 4ts students and has not asked for a tax hike in some time, while the costs of operating have skyrocketed in thjp same time period The district needs the money, yet the voters blatantly refuse to support it. "I, the teachers, and the students of McHenry high school are disillusioned by the lack of civic support for this fine educational institution. I had imagined that the citizens of McHenry would gladly support its school systems because of the obvious benefits derived from a quality educational program. I was obviously mistaken. I stand corrected. "Sincerely, "Derek Gilbert "Sophomore, "McHenry High School" A LONELY SEASON "Editor: "I would like to Say something about the elderly. -FRIDAY, JANUARY f.
