PARE It - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 1, 1978 THURSDAY 6:30 P.M. Early Thursday morning/ one of the worst blizzards in the history of McHenry began. Motorists were warned'of the coming blizzard conditions by newspapers, radio and television the previous evening. Many motorists chose to ignore those warnings as they headed for work. Some probably were just anxious to get a first hand look at what a blizzard was really like. Hundreds of the motorists, their cars equipped with CB's, asked for road conditions. When a "good buddy" gave them the bad news of the condition of the roads, they failed to take their friends' word of truth, and proceeded forward. In many cases they found themselves stuck in a snowdrift or even worse, in an accident. Thursday evening, highway congestion became even greater. Those who made it safely to work and tried to better their record by making it- a round trip, found conditions had worsened. They failed to better their record. The roads were in such poor condition due to drifts and stuck cars, even rescue squads were hampered as members tried to perform their duty. STAFF PHOTOS BY WAYNE GAYLORD The chore didn't end after digging oat the auto. The next task was to get it started.
