RTE. 120 McHENRY MARKET PLACE 385-6655 Youth Conservation corps programs have been scheduled for next summer to include the Volo Bog Nature preserve, Chain O'Lakes State park, and McHenry county Conservation districts, Conservation Director David Kenney has announced. The Youth Conservation corps, funded jointly by the U.S. Departments of Interior and Agriculture and ad­ ministered in Illinois by the Department of Conservation, provides summer jobs and environmental education op­ portunities to young people 15 through 18 years of age. Par­ ticipation is open to young men and women of all ethnic, racial, and social and economic backgrounds, Dr. Kenney pointed out. Interested candidates have until March 15 to submit their applications for jobs at any of the three levels. Forms may be obtained at any of the area sites or l>y contacting Barbara Beeler, YCC Coordinator, at the Conservation Department's Lands and Historic Sites Division offices, 405 E. Washington street, Springfield, IL. 61706. " , Ms. Beeler stressed that applications this year are to be sent to the YCC Selection office in Virginia, not to the Con­ servation department or local communities as in the past. Enrollees will be chosen by computer at the federal headquarters, but candidate notification will come through thtTrb'epartment of Con­ servation. All but two of the state park programs, one of the local agency programs and two of the five on federal lands will be non-residential'. Participants will commute daily between their homes and the work sites. 'Residential' programs will require enrollees to live in camps provided for them on the grounds. YCC sessions will range from 4 to 10 weeks. At some sites, two sessions will be held. Enrollees will earn the federal minimum hourly wage for a 30-hour work week. An additional 10 hours per week will be devoted to environmental education ac­ tivities conducted by experts in a variety of environmental disciplines. Projects: renovate porches on barn; remove fence; install two-mile fence; install boundary signs; ancTapply woodchip surface to trail. Projects: install privies in two picnic areas; renovate picnic areas; finish sign fabrication and installation along equestrian trail; develop trail and wildlife viewing area; install one mile of fencing; construction of privy and picnic facilites for handicapped users in trail area: and construction of Overlook area along a trail designated for handicapped users, ('residential' camp) McHenry county Con­ servation district < $13,260.80) - twelve enrollees for six-week session. Harrison students received seventeen first and twelve second place ratings in their solo events and the musical ensembles received nine first and five second place ratings. Four vocal students received perfect scores at this contest. Those students are Mary Higgins, Doug Maris, Yvonne Miller and Andee Norton.
