Prepare For Science Fair Sunnyside Area Betty Messer 344-2494 Eighth grade students Scott Truckenbrod and Steve Schiera show Mary Heritage an experiment in the production of acids in preparing for the Montini Science fair to be held at the Middle school April 19,20 and 21. Mrs. Dolores Wines is Science fair chairman. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Montini Catholic school students invite the public to view their Science fair Thur sday evening, April 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Middle school gym. Projects from all phases of Science will be exhibited. Judging will take place Thursday afternoon from 3 to 5:30 p.m. by local teachers, Science professionals and some top senior students, as well as college Science students. Ribbons are awarded along with certificates on an in dividual basis. There is no admission charge and all of the community is encouraged to view the projects including Ecology, Space, Biology, Zoology and Nuclear Sciences. The projects are a definite part of the Science curriculum at the Middle school (fifth- eighth grades) and are extra curricular at the Primarv center (first-fourth gradesK Science chairman for the fair is Mrs. Dolores Wines, seventh and eighth grade Science teacher. Tampering With Mail Serious Federal Offense A few calls recently indicate that mailboxes are being ^ tampered with and mail is disappearing. Envelopes are found open and, in one recent incident, a Social Security check disappeared. It was traced and found sometime later, but not before the recipient was caused a great deal of inconvenience. Parents, please warn your children not to touch mail. ' Many senior citizens depend on their Social Secuirty checks reaching them in time. It takes quite some time to get a lost check replaced. The mail should not be touched by anyone other than the party it was meant for. NEW ARRIVAL On Tuesday, March 28, Celine McCullom Lake Mary Jo Farrell 344-1575 Open Water Puts Dredge Back In Action The McCullom Lake Con servation club will meet Thursday, April 20, at 8 p.m. at the Spojnia barn. The dredge is back in action since the lake is thawed, so the club can really use youc help. Go to the meeting and see what you can do for your lake. CELEBRATION With Donna and Roger Gates' birthdays falling only one day apart every year, the festivities uttially go on for several days, elpecially when a weekend is involved. This year was cer tainly no exception, and was made extra special by the arrival of Donna's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Houtchens, and her niece, Ledonya, from Louisville, Ky. On Thursday, Donna's friends took her out for lunch to celebrate her birthday. Friday brought Grandma and Grandpa and gifts for all, with lots of excitement. Saturday was another party, celebrating both birthdays, and then Sunday, Roger and his friends celebrated with a birthday party at our local fast-food birthday party place. When your birthday stretches out such a long time, it's a lot easier to slide into the one-year- older spot with more aplomb. Donna and Roger Gates seem to have managed it rather nicely. CONGRATS Congratulations to Monty Yates.who was recently elected vice chairman of the McHenry county Central Democratic committee. NOTE Contrary to popular rumor, Sharon and Jim Grutzmacher have informed me that they have no intention of moving out of our village. PICTURES Pictures from this year's Little Miss McCullom Lake contest are at Jackie Raycraft's house, 2712 N. Eastwood drive, and can be picked up there. They are not prints, they're slides, and each parent is welcome to take the slides of his or her own child, and to order prints of the group. Last year's pictures are at Jackie's house, also, in case anyone is interested in seeing them. A special mention must be made about Kevin Uttich, the junior high student who was gracious enough to take the pictures of our contest. He really did a terrific job, and we're all sure he has a great future ahead of him in photography. WORTH THE WAIT The Raycraft family, Jerry, Jackie, Joey, and Bob, ap peared on the Bozo show last week, and after waiting 8 years to be on the show, the whole family agreed it was well worth the wait. The trip to Chicago, the appearance on the show, and just being together doing something exciting was a real treat for the Raycrafts. BIRTHDAYS- ANNIVERSARIES Happy birthday this week to Mark Behrendt, who has a birthday April 19, to Raina Rourke, who celebrates a big day April 20, to Janet Behrendt April 23, to Marie Howe and Barbara Reiter, who both have birthdays April 24, and to Joy Ellen Miller, who will be 2 years old April 25. Hope you all have wonderful birthdays. Happy anniversary this week to Ruth and Orville Brandt, who celebrate another year of happy marriage April 20. Salt creek once had sand bottoms and clear water. Summer swimming holes for the kids. There were schools of bass and blue gills feeding in pools above the rushing waters over limestone rocks. "There were pickerel and northern pike up to 40 inches long along the sometimes grassy banks. There were large creek chubs and channel catfish to add lo the lun There were monstrous size carp in the lily pads that brought out a little Tom Sawyer in every little boy with a spear or bow and arrow. You could fish below the dam and never know what your catch would be. An unusual place indeed! "Many years later I took a walk in a forest preserve that had been one of my favorite places. I was appalled by the dead fish everywhere. Crabs by the thousands were out of the water and clinging to branches on the shore with dirty green moss on their shells. Parasitic worms lining the creek bottom waved like tall grass in the wind. Salt Creek was dead! "I fear the same fate for the Fox river if plans materiali/e to allow millions of gallons of waste daily to be piped into the Fox river via Fox Lake and other cities. "For the past several months articles have appeared on stopping the Fox lake sewage plant from coming into the Fox river. .Many of you have attended meetings all over the county concerning this matter. Now time is running short. Is that what we want to happen to the Fox river? l*A(iK 17 - i'LAINDKAi.KIt - "McHenry county residents are urged to call and support Richard Klemm, McHenry Board of Commissions. 1-338- 2040.
