--X HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal lake. Illinois 60014 (•15)459-2641 by Estelle Atwell Good things come in twos. Bright, alert, and eager to please is the nature of the Irish Setter. This 2-year-old male, neutered and with shots, is terrific with children, housebroken and eager to acquaint a new owner with his many fine qualities. Please call 815-338-3356. If you have the time to give him and the space to house and exercise him, then you were meant for each other. D. KAISER PHOTO Hoppy, a happy toad, has been living in a friend's greenhouse 4 years now, and plans to renew his lease. Not too amazing that a toad would find pleasant habitation in a greenhouse, but the experience has convinced the owner that even in the so-called lower forms of life there is in telligence and capacity for companionship and friendship between man and a lowly toad. Besides Hoppy, the household includes a dog and a cat. As the cat eats a little at a time, and the dog eats his food plus the cat's food if he gets a chance, a practical arrangement has been established. The cat 's food is placed in the greenhouse, the dog's in the kitchen. There is a small door between the two rooms just large enough for the cat to exit and re-enter but not large enough for the dog to squeeze through The cat's daily rations consist of a can of cat food plus a bowl of dry mix. Ample proof that Hoppy likes the dry mix is the telltale strip of mud, the width of his body, on the rim of the bowl And Hoppy has that well-fed look-he's large, about the size of a man's clenched fist. There was a get-acquainted confrontation when cat and toad met. an incident which established the toad's> supremacy in the greenhouse. The owner watched as it happened. Cat approached toad in what might be described as a stalking manner. Hoppy proved he was no mouse then and there. He stood his ground, swelled, and exuded a protective substance, obviously obnoxious. The cat got one mouthful, became sick, and threw up; from then on he left the toad strictly alone. Peaceful co-existence now reigns. But the friendly side of Hoppy s nature shows when the owner spends a little time every 3 days sprinkling the plants. Out comes Hoppy and sits at his feet, looking up at him. He reaches down and strokes Hoppy's head half a HOMEOWNER'S Nood Concroto for Patios, Sidewalks, Driveways. Call Accu-Crete Inc. Saturday Dtllwrys Phone 338-4718 dozen times while the little creature sits quietly enjoying it. Hoppy is helpful too-he has taken care of a typical greenhouse problem, the in creasing population of water crickets. The population no longer increases. Between the greenery, the bowl of cat food, and the water crickets, there is plenty for two- -toads that is. Now the owner is hoping to find a toad as com panion for Hoppy--the right sex, of course, to make it a happy menage a deux.
