STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD I didn't know that! Some baseball players have a clause in their contract requiring the club to furnish them double beds or king size bunks when they are on the road. * The modern day athlete really roughs it. If April showers bring May flowers, this week is doing its share. Most of us can't wait for July to roll around so we can complain about the heat. When some people were discussing our community recently, one agreed that this isn't lil' old McHenry any more. Asked them how long they have lived here and the reply was, "ten years". All agreed that our city has growing pains. But, ten years! They should have seen McHenry 20-30-40-50 or so years ago. They said they had moved here to get away from a big city and are now thinking of moving to a peaceful small town in Wisconsin. Guess you have to choose carefully no matter how you move. The crowds are following. If you read the sport page or pages in the Plaindealer, you realize that McHenry high is doing real well in various spring sports. With the program we now have, it seems every boy and girl has a chance to develop skills. All participants cannot reach varsity level in competition, but where there is desire and effort they can reach new levels. Each sport requires a little extra effort. Basketball players should shoot free throws all summer. Look at the box scores. Those free throws win a lot of games. We see great desire and dedication in the ranks of the cross country runners. They spend many hours running during the off season. One of my readers tells me it wasn't Will Rogers who said "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." He has named the wit who said it. What do you say? Remember the penny post card and the 3-cent stamp? Sure do. Cleaning out a desk drawer, we found some 5 cent, 6 and 8 centers. Up and up we go. Who said "What this country needs is a good 5-cent cigar?" Schools may have changed, but some punishments are as old as the covered wagon. Remember when you talked in school and your teacher made you write "I will not talk in school" a hundred times? One time I had to write the sentence 500 times and estimated the end of the school year would arrive before I could complete the assignment. The idea wasn't original, but I used ditto marks and left the papers on the teacher's desk End of story. The roof fell in. OLD SAYING: Better to remain silent and be thought dumb than to speak and remove all doubt. (Note: This is the second in a series of articles previewing the eight teams in the McHenry Men's 16" Softball league.) The Old Bridge Softball club, fourth place finishers last year, are the number one threat to end the domination of the league by the Johnsburg tavern (formerly Hettermann's). Off-season acquisitions and the holdover's from last year's team, give the Old Bridge a balanced combination of hit ting, defense and speed. Greg Freund was acquired from the Sunnyside Inn Suns during the winter and is con sidered by many to be the best all-around pitcher in the league. Freund brings his high-arc pitching effectiveness and his big bat to the Bridge and will start on the mound. Rick Wakitsch, who last year was the catcher on Het- termann's championship team, will toil at first base. He played only sparingly at first base in recent years but is more than adequate defen sively and will occupy one of the middle spots in the batting order. Slick-fielding short-center fielder Ron Miller is the stabalizing factor of the club's defense. He has been a fixture at this position for the past few seasons and his left-handed hitting will be a nemesis to the opposition all season. Bill Brennan, last year's first baseman, will be moving to the left side of the infield this year and will play shortstop or third base. Brennan tailed off at the plate last year, but is expected to start the season weighing twenty pounds less than last year and a big season is needed from him if the Bridge is to contend for the championship. Dave Schaefer, one of four players picked from Sun- nyside's team of last year, will flank Brennan on the left side of the infield. Schaefer, another leftie, was a hitting star in previous years, although he slumped last year Thinclads Second In Triangular Coach Dan Boland's McHenry high school track team finished second to Libertyville in a triangular meet held Monday at Mun delein. Libertyville won the meet with 86 pts. followed by tfle Warriors with 69 and the host Mundelein finished a distant third with 23 pts. The Warriors won 9 events, but lack of depth was their downfall in the meet. The sophs likewise finished second to Libertyville as the Cats scored 101 to the Warriors 62 and the hosts a mere 11. Tomorrow the Warriors travel to Kaneland to take part in the Kaneland Invitational along with 28 other schools from the northern part of the state. Monday the Warriors are at home in a meet with North Chicago, who are the odds on favorite to repeat as North Suburban champs, as well as being a contender for the state title this year. This is a good opportunity for you track fans to see a good dual meet, as the visitors are loaded, but the Warriors will be able to give them a battle in a dual meet. Time is 4:30 at McCracken field. *-• Varsity Results 440 Relay - 46.2 McHenry, Libertyville, Mundelein 2 Mile - 9: W^Rurman (McH) Reily (Lr Shannon (L) Leonhart (L) 120 yd. FREE BEER ft FOOD I & The OLD BRIDGE TAVEKN RIVERSIDE & PEARL ST., McHENRY 385-0305 KENNE LUDWIG Eastern Illinois university's head golf coach, Mike McLaughlan, reports good things about Kenne Ludwig, now a junior in the school. Says the coach, "Kenne has become a valuable member of EIU's golf team. At present he is our No. 2 golfer in competition". Eureka College News reports that Brian Nuss was a member of the 440 relay team that took second place in Bradley's Quadrangular last week. Brian, who showed speed in high school, is a sophomore at Eureka and will be heard more of before he graduates. while playing for the lowly Suns. The final infield spot should be manned by Tim Althoff. Considered by many league observers as one of the hardest hitters in the circuit, Althoff is capable of playing infield, - outfield or catcher. Starting the season at cat cher could possibly be rookie Gary Gilpin. An all-star in the teenage league last year, Gilpin's big bat will earn him a place in the lineup and he is a capable in- fielder also, where he played last year. Steve Rohrer, last year's league all-star catcher," un derwent knee surgery during the winter, and is not expected to see action until the season is underway, Rohrer's powerful left- handed hitting will be missed until he is able to return to the lineup. John Pitzen, the third refugee from Sunnyside on the Old Bridge roster, is expected to see plenty of playing time this season. A pair of quick hands enables Pitzen to play many positions and his versatility could earn him a starting role. Many people believe that the starting outfield for the Bridge will be the strongest in the league both offensively and defensively. Starting in center field will be Tom Les and he will be flanked by Joe Dehn and Doug Freund. All three bat left-handed and boast better than average speed, enabling them to use the short 16" bases to their ad vantage. Les is possibly the best defensive outfielder in the league and has been one of the leading hitters on the club the past three seasons. Dehn, who left Hettermann's along with Wakitsch after playing the entire season at left field, got off to a slow start in 1977, but finished strong and ended up in the top ten in hitting for the season. Probably the fastest man in the league running to first base, Freund played left field for Coppermine last year. He can hit to all fields and his fine speed makes him a genuine offensive threat. In addition to a strong starting lineup, the Old Bridge has players who are capable of starting on other teams in the league in a back-up role. , * Bruce Harbecke, the starting first baseman for Sunnyside last year; Gene Hester, an infielder ending a brief retirement; Pete Merkel, a utility infielder; Charley Jeske, a rookie pitcher; and Bob Mauch a regular with Haut- zinger Concrete last year before being sidelined by an injury will see action in a supportive role. League observers feel that one drawback for the Bridge will be the fact that it is their first year playing together in the league. Another question raised concerns the apparent abun dance of talent on the team. Other league managers feel that dissension will rock the Old Bridge boat, causing on-the- field performance to be af fected. At present, Old Bridge must be considered a genuine threat to the Johnsburg Tavern, and their first head-to-head com petition will b^a critical game for both teams.
