i$ 5ft & :¥ (<- On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbltt Coach Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors are not only the talk of the town, but of the North Suburban Conference. When can you remember a Warrior baseball team 9 and 0 at any time during the season? Yet the Warriors are undefeated through nine games this spring, and are tied with Zion for first place in the North Suburban. The popular "Crusher" has had good pitching with Barry Paulsen, Bob Sharp, Dave Covalt and Bobby Hansen doing the mound work for him this season. His team has played steller defense, going through a double header last Saturday against North Chicago without a miscue. How many high school teams can perform that feat in a double header? And they start swinging the bat the minute they come off the bench. Hitting is what they like to do, and the coach can call upon any number of pinch hitters confident that they will do the job for him. Yes, if the bubble doesn't burst we are going to have a gay old time this spring with the Warrior baseball team. John and Jeff Meyers attack the ball if it were a mere ping pong ball, and the rest of the Warriors are following suit. The Warriors have had to play to win, even non-conference games. The I.H.S.A. had done it again. They have divided the baseball teams into two classes, such as football, and basketball. This is good for the smaller teams like Hebron, Richmond, and Marian that usually wound up in the District with the Warriors and Woodstock. The division of schools is an excellent idea. But the format for the Class AA series leaves something to be desired. Once again our beloved officials in Bloomington have come up with a brainstorm. Each Class AA regional will have twelve teams. A twelve team baseball tournament in the spring of the year in the Northern part of the state, where at times 4t was difficult to get through with a four team tourney. Pairings will be made this week, and byes will be offered to the teams with the best record. It was necessary for the Warriors to have a good record, in order for them to advance in the state series. The Regional will be held in Elgin later in May, but there will be playoffs in various schools to see who advances to Elgin Regional. Non- conference games are for fun, but the state has taken away the fun, and now winning at all costs becomes the important item for the schools in the state. Gary Gray's netters won their second quadrangular of the season, and is fast filling up a trophy case at West campus. For a team that has no indoor facilities whatsoever, the team and coach do a wonderful job in the outdoor season. If McHenry ever has an indoor facility, watch out the Warriors could be a state challenger. Dan Boland's thinclads travel to Kaneland tomorrow for a meet with twenty-eight other schools. It has to be one of the biggest meets in the state, and need I say it will be an all day affair. Next Friday the Warriors host the McHenry Relays, which we will have more about next week. Keep the date on your calendar, Friday, April 28, it is a night affair, and will attract seventeen other schools along with the Warriors. Have a note from good friend John Bolton the pro at Chapel Hill. Sunday, May 7 Men's Best Ball Foursome for members onlv. breakfast at 7 a.m. Shotgun teeoff at 8 a.m. Teams will be matched evenly according to handicap. The first 120 to sign up will play. Course is closed to public until after 1:30 p.m. Ladies will tee off at 1 for a nine hole playoff similar to the men's eighteen hole tourney. The genial John is looking forward to a big day on May 7. Yours truly will be among those playing, and hoping he does a better job of giving me some good partners than last year. Those low handicap golfers are no good in this type of tourney.
