STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD m EARL WALSH ~ So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR It is always nice to hear that somebody is recognized for loyalty and good works. Members of McHenry's American Legion Post No. 491 have shown they haven't forgotten the efforts of one of their most active members, Bernie Matchen. Bernie has been presented with a life membership and proudly carries a beautiful, inscribed pocket plaque which identifies his standing in the organization. My congratulations to Bernie and an added pat on the back to those who didn't forget to remember. Time marches on. This week's society page carries an announcement of the engagement of my niece, Nancy Blake It must be later than we think With a promise of 70 degree weather, it seems safe to put away your winter boots, store the bird feeders and take off your snow tires. Joe Dehn thinks the White Sox miss the home runs produced by the departed Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble last year. They are missing something. Pitchers miss the corners and batters miss the ball. But, like a good man, you can't keep them down. One of these days they will put it all together. Our confidence knows no bounds. Thought of Richmond as a small town until Tuesday night when I toured north to attend a Rotary meeting. Found out at Orsolini's that there was no meeting at the regular site. The club was serving a spaghetti dinner. So - away we go for the dinner. Thought the serving would be in St. Joseph's church hall as in some past years. Nope. Nobody at the church. Aha! There goes a police car. So I followed (at a reasonable rate of speed). The officer hadn't heard of the dinner. That's when I knew .Richmond isn't a small town anymore. Normally you go to the corner drug store for in formation. But, the corner drug store is long gone. Pulled up in front of Van's and saw a sign in the window advertising the dinner being held in the high school cafeteria. Success! Sat down next to the Hugh Fannings. Some people say "I Found It", meaning religion. What I found at long last was the dinner, good company and a good time. By Dick Rabbitt The highly regarded North Chicago Warhawks defeated the Warriors in a dual track meet Monday at McCracken field by the score of 89 to 52. It was a case of just too much speed by the visitors as they won the 440 and mile relays, and swept the 100 yd dash and 330 low hurdles. Tim Hughes won the pole vault with a vault of 12'6", and A1 Reinboldt won the shot at 47'11". The McHenry frosh-sophs put on a fine display and beat the Warhawks 75 to 66 in a thriller that went down to the last event. Giagonini won both the triple jump, and long jump for the Warriors. Margie Boyer, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Boyer, 1304 Old Bay road, and Karen Pepping, 3105 W. Virginia, braved rain and temperatures in the 40's to compete in the largest women's sporting event ever held in this country. Heather Bilandic, wife of Chicago's mayor, sounded the gong to officially start the race while the mayor was stationed at the four mile marker to encourage the competitors. Ms. Boyer, a senior at Western Illinois university, finished the 6.2 mile race in a time of 43 minutes. The, winner of the race, Beverly Roland of Peoria, another WIU student, finished in 37 minutes, 10 seconds. This was the first competitive race for Ms. Boyer, who has been running for three years and runs 35 miles a week in a training program. She had injured her ankle two weeks earlier, but participated in the race despite her heavily taped ankle. Ms. Pepping finished with a time of 57 minutes, sixteen minutes behind the winner of her age group. She ran her first half-mile in July and now runs 20-30 miles a week. Both runners experienced the excitement of competing with the top women runners in the country. Gayle Barron, Atlanta, winner of this year's Boston Marathon and Kim Merritt, Racine, winner of last year's Boston Marathon, were both participants in the "Bonnie Bell."
