Beauty Salon PHONE 385-4520 r American Legion Auxiliary News PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER -WEDNESDAY, MAY 10. 1978 Community Women's Club Choses Woman Of The Year A very happy and proud member of Lakeland Park Women's club was surprised at the officers' luncheon held Thursday, May 4, when she was chosen Outstanding Woman of the Year. Mrs. Steve (Anfte* Moore was chosen by a vote vf the membership of the club to receive the award this year. A beautifully engraved plaque bearing a gavel was awarded her along with a lovely opal stick pin from the club as an acknowledgement of her work as president during the past year. A report was read pertaining to the annual Luncheon and Card party and the women County SERPO Ends Year With Social Potluck The last SERPO (Southeast Regional Parent organization of Special Education district of McHenry county) meeting of this school year will be held Thursday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the SEDOM center in Woodstock in the form of a potluck supper. were delighted to hear it was a huge success. Members who attended the luncheon included Adele Arndt, Marie Cross, Mary Dobbins, Edna Domrese, Millie Eylander, Sharon Gacek, Maureen Johnson, Viola Kelly, Shirley Koch, Frances Kostka, Willie Meyers, Charlene Nylander, Cecilia Oakford, Mary Pautz, Lyda Radisch. Barbara Rathmann, Ruth Roach, Fleda Rogers, Mary Schaan, Beverly Walinski, Zena Thoresen and guest, Elke Krak. The ladies received lovely carnations and each color had a special meaning. The red went to last year's officers, yellow to Parents are asked to invite their children's teachers and supportive personnel to come "meet and eat" and have the opportunity to get acquainted on a social basis. The swimming pool and gym at the center will be available for use so proper apparel should be brought. Those attending are asked to bring their own meat to cook on the outside grills, eating utinsils and a dish to pass. SERPO will furnish punch, coffee and cups. the new officers, green to the registrar and guest, white to any new members and blue to the general membership. The new club officers will be installed at the next meeting Thursday evening, May 11, at 7:30 p.m.; at the community house.-'After installation, a demonstration will be held with proceeds benefitting the club. Cake and coffee will be served and anyone interested is most welcome to attend. Officers to be installed are Sharon^Gacek, president; Barbara^ Rathmann, vice president Ruth Roach, secretary; Shirley Koch, treasurer; and Adele Arndt will be reinstated as registrar. Vests will be worn over many outfits this spring. You can wear one with a shirtwaist dress or over a taylored blouse with skirt or pants. Sundresses are being shown in all shops and are proving to be quite popular. Multiple prints are blended with solid colors. home Wednesday, May 24. All past presidents' are urged to attend. Birthday greetings were extended to Marie Howe and Mary Freund. Othelle Brady was not present to receive the attendance award. Initiation - for new members was held and Karma Barc- zynski, Dora Burlack, Danita Chesler, Marge Hartung and Louise Sineni were initiated into the McHenry unit of the American Legion auxiliary by the following: Grace Latimer, Marge Datz, Eleanore Reid, Marie Howe, Midge Scharf and Pearl Cooper. Danita Chesler stood in for Refreshment Chairmen Cathy Fenner and Cheryl Mowrer with her committee of Dolores Lawrence, Colleen Brock, Grace Steinsdorfer, Eleanor Althoff, Ellen Huska, Catherine Weber, Darlene Mrachek, Catherine Stilling, Shirley Hayes, Edna Knox, Jaclean Bowles, dorothy Stoffel, Anne Lee and Linda Anderson. GLADYS DICKELMAN On May 11, the Covenant Womens' Fellowship group from Chain O' Lakes Evangelical Covenant church, will host speaker Mrs. Gladys Dickelman. She will be presenting a program entitled "Citizens Alert", a topic that is centered around Christian responsibility and citizenship. Mrs. Dickelman is a representative of Pro-Family and Pro-Life, and she will be discussing and answering questions concerning the Equal Rights amendment. Mrs. Dickelman has received her teaching experience primarily in the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. She is also involved in leadership in her local church. She has taught and lectured to women both nationally and locally at women's clubs, church groups and retreats, from many denominations, Protestant and Catholic. Four years ago she founded a Bible study series for women called Women of the Word, This ministry is now expanding to encompass many of the communities in the metropolian Chicago area. In addition to teaching she is continuing her studies in Bible at Whefeton college Her many years of training and working with all age groups including teens, enable her to relate most effectively, especially in the role of the contemporary woman, single or married, to live in a dynamic and abundant life with priorities and values according to God's word. The meeting will end with a time of fellowship and refreshments Garden Club Sponsors May Greenery Sale The annual McHenry Garden club Flower and Plant sale will be held at the McHenry roller rink parking lot, 914 N. Front street, Friday, May 12, > beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to many garden plants and flowers indigenous to this area, this sale features selected favorite cuttings and seedlings of indoor greenery raised by members of the club.' Broadway, McHenry, welcome their second son, Jonathan, born at McHenry hospital, Saturday, April 29. The infant weighed an even 8 lbs. at time of arrival. He joins a brother, Jimmy, Jr., 5 years old. MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WOODSTOCK Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Willert of Wonder Lake are the parents of a son born Sunday, May 7. FIRSTBORN It's a boy for Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Wirfs of 3707 W. John St., Apt. A, McHenry. Christopher Robert was born Wednesday, April 26, at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, and weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. at birth. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Adams and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Wirfs, all of McHenry. McHenry great grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adams, Mrs. Vera Fish and Mrs. Charles Rogers. l' BABY NAMED The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Macey of 9409 Keystone road, Richmond, has been named Steven James. A healthy 7 lbs. 4»v oz. was registered on the scales after his birth Tuesday, April 16, at Lutheran General hospital, Park Ridge. He has a 5-year-old brother, Bryan Keith. Mrs. Pauline Fisher of McHenry is the delighted grandmother. The regular monthly meeting of the McHenry American Legion auxiliary Unit No. 491 was • conducted by Vice President Grace Latimer, in the absence of President Lydia Fenner, at the legion post home. Chaplain Eleanore Reid led the group in the Prayer for Peace and the flags were posted by Sergeant at Arms Margaret Datz and Midge Scharf. The pledge of allegiance was recited, the group sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and the preamble to the American Legion auxiliary was recited in unison. Vice President Grace Latimer and Chaplain Eleanore Reid draped the charter for departed member Clara Nell. Mary Kantorski, Gold Star chairman, announced that the next meeting will be a potluck dinner and will honor the Gold Star members. This meeting will be held Monday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m., and all members are urged to attend to honor the Gold Star mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives. ' Americanism Chairman Pat Borcovan announced that a flag was to be donated to the Parkland Junior high and the Americanism essay winners and their mothers were to guests at the Gold Star dinner to receive their awards. Poppy Day Chairman Midge Scharf announced that Poppy day will be held Saturday, May 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all volunteer members are requested to contact her if they are able to help sell poppies. All poppy money is used for the hospitalized veterans and the support of members and volunteers in selling poppies is needed. Midge also announced that 3,000 poppies and three dozen poppy cans have been purchased this year. Girl's State Chairman Marge Datz announced that the district Girls' State "get acquainted tea" was held at the McHenry post home in April. Rehabilitation Chairman Reba Owem asked the mem­ bers to bring cookies, candy and creature comforts to the May meeting as the unit is to entertain the Elgin hospital veterans at a dinner Tuesday, May 16. Past Presidents' Parley- Chairman Marge Datz an­ nounced that nine past presidents were going to attend the county past presidents' dinner in Marengo. She also announced that a past presidents' meeting will be hosted by Midge Scharf at her #
