Sports Notes The Marian Central Hurricanes frosh-soph squad ttfrned in some outstanding performances in the recent West Suburban Catholic con ference meet. The young Canes roduced three conference lampions as they swept the tire singles competition. £Mike Kiernan won the no. 1 igles title with a 6-3, 6-2 conquest; Mike Davis won the rio.2 singles 6-3, 6-1; and Jim IcAndrews took the no. 3 igles crown 6-7, 6-1, 7-6. Both jubles teams of J.V. Noulis & |ris Juswik and Jim Hertrich id Paul Olzak also scored well Marian by reaching the ii- final bracket and thus the )ioung squad finished second in the conference standings. iOn the varsity level the llurricanes finished fifth in the ffhal conference standing as Dave Kozial was the only I^arian netter to reach the semi final bracket. Next on the agenda for Marian will be matches with Jacobs, Grant and the IHSA State tour nament. The Hurricane tennis squad recorded two more victories by defeating Jacobs in a non- conference match 4-1 on the varsity level and 5-0 on the frosh-soph level. On the varsity level Tom Carey won at no. 1 singles 6-0,6- 4; Dave Kozial won at no. 2 singles 6-3,6-3; Jay Grover won at no. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Rusty Nail was hurt in last week's humiliating 15-0 whitewash, but Kevin Bauer guarantees "the Nail will take number three." O'Brewery hit the ball well last week as they almost came back from a 10-run deficit. Guy Hansen's game saving catch ended a final inning threat. The Brewery has always had "problems" when they play Rusty Nail. Steve George is his usual 'pessimistic-self' especially before a Nail- Brewery contest. The game is a toss up until the factor of team' morale is brought up Rusty Nail all the way. In the fourth game of the week Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl meets Old Bridge at Peterson Park in "the game of the week". Last week Joe Dehn picked the game of the week. He was half right. The Old Bridge played like champs; the Nail didn't come close in a 15-0 Bridge rout. That's been the story so far this year as Old Bridge has swept their first three games. Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl opened with a big 20-6 win to celebrate entry into the 12-Inch League. But in their last two outings, a one-run loss to the Nail and a one-run win over the Hospital, they have not played up to their potential. Look for an Old Bridge win in "the game of the week". Pat Wirtz The hottest news around McHenry High sports circles is the conference championship won by Coach Ken Swanson's baseball team. While McHenry High has moved up in various sports, championships have been hard to come by. So -- a pat on the back goes to Coach Swanson and his Warrior players. While everybody knows you have to have the players to win in any sport, it takes good coaching to guide them to a championship. When things go wrong, it is par for the course to blame the coach. That's why I like to give due credit to the coach when he produces a winner. What goes on around here? Sirens seem to be blowing like mad. Police sirens, fire and rescue squad blasts have been going strong. Thank the Lord for those who answer the calls. Dick Rabbitt turned in pages of well kept statistics on the high school baseball season. It will take some sifting out, but will be ready for the Friday issue. There was a time when a young athlete was happy as a lark when he was given a uniform. SPORTS EDITOR _ with a group of men who were shaking their heads in sorrow over the death of Bob Gausden. A fine young man had been suddenly taken from a fine family. Shortly afterward I came home to hear the sad news that Alvina's brother, Harold, had died in a sudden accident. Everybody was in shock. Met "Mac" McCracken, Harold's high school football coach, at the wake and discussion got around to the fact that Harold was one rugged fellow on the football field. The mighty Warriors were •i to threr hits, their lowest total of the season. Dundee jumped off to a 3 to 0 lead in the first inning. However, the Warriors with the help of errors afid sloppy play on the part of "Cards" managed to tie it >y the end of the third. Art put it this way: "Harold never ran around the defense. He ran over them." As rugged as Harold was in combat, he was the friendlist, most likeable young man you could hope to meet Harold Freund was never out to harm anybody. His smile would disarm those whom he met. Old Bridge stunned the Rusty Nail by a score of 15-0 in the "game of the week" while King's Row pulled a minor upset with a 12-9 victory over St. Regis. The Chalet handed O'Brewery their third straight loss in a 21-18 slugfest and Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl barely slipped by the McHenry Hospital 7-6 in ten innings. Standings w 1 Old Bridge 3 0 Kings Row 3 0 Raymond's Bowl 2 1 Rusty Nail 2 1 St. Regis 1 2 The Chalet 1 2 McHenry Hosp. 0 3 O'Brewery 0 3 In games this Wednesday McHenry Hospital will meet St. Regis at West Campus, South field. McHenry Hospital is playing better softball after a poor opener but St. Regis should have few problems picking up win number two. St. Regis is averaging 22 hits per game despite two loses in 3 games. The McHenry Hospital is averaging not quite half that with 10 plus per game. Look for St. Regis to come out swinging! The Chalet will be looking for a win number two as they meet an ever impressive King's Row. The game will be played at West Campus, North field. Chuck Marke of King's Row, batting 12 for 14 (.857), is tearing up the league. Marke had 7 RBI's and 7 runs scored plus 2 homeruns which have been instrumental in all 3 King's Row victories. The Chalet has shown they can hit the ball too, as they ripped off 28 hits in their 21-18 win last week. We will pick King's Row to win but look for a close game. Rusty Nail takes on O'Brewery in a rematch from last year's playoff matchup. The game will be played at East Campus. • • • McHenry Area 12-Inch Softball EARL WALSH So I Hear NORTH SUBURBAN BASEBALL FINAL Team w McHENRY 11 Libertyville 10 Mundelein 10 Zion Benton 9 Crown 5 Crystal Lake 5 North Chicago 3 Lake Forest 3 Today we find players like Claudell Washington, who was .J traded to the Sox, disappearing •? for a few days before repor- 4 j?
