'V <" MENS 16" SOFTBALL LANDS RECORD TARPON Dan Harbecke, a former resident of the McHenry area, is shown above with the record tarpon he recently caught in Florida. Harbecke, who now owns a tackle- sports shop in Cape Coral, landed the 196-pound tarpon following an hour-long battle and the fish ranks as one of the heaviest tarpon caught in Florida in recent history. The big tarpon measured 77 inches from the point of the lower Jaw to the fork of the tail and sported a tremendous 48-inch girth. The fish was caught in the Caloosahatchee river. It was Harbecke's second tarpon fishing trip. On his first trip, he landed a UO-pounder. Family Problem Illinois' top child welfare official has cited a 58 percent increase in reports of suspected sexual abuse of children in an appeal for a comprehensive community approach to this growing problem. Department of Children and Family ser­ vices Director Margaret Kennedy recently told the Rape Study committee of the Illinois House of Representatives that her department will receive 1,000 reports of suspected sexual abuse of children by the end of June. This compares to 632 such reports the previous year. "Sexual abuse most often means incest," Miss Kennedy said, "and incest is a family problem." Town Pump Routs " Hautzinger Town Pump scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to rout Hautzinger Concrete 15-4, in the first game Thursday night. The win raised Town Pump's record to 2-0, while the loss dropped Hautzinger to 0-2. The seven run first inning was aided by two Hautzinger errors and six hits, including three doubles. Hautzinger was hampered by poor defense throughout the contest, committing a total of nine errors. Ddrrel Anderson led the Town Pump with 2 for 3, with four runs scored, three rims batted in, and a double and a triple. For Hautzinger, Jerry Brodin and Vem Peterson were both 2 for 3. Coppermine Bombs Sunnyside Inn Coppermine capitalized on eight Sunnyside Inn errors and routed the hapless Suns, 21-6, in Thursday's second game. The game only lasted five innings because of the fifteen run slaughter rule. Sunnyside has yet to finish a game, losing 20-0 in its first game in five innings. Coppermine evened its record at 1-1, scoring three times in the first inning, four times in the second, three times in the third, added nine runs in the fourth innning and finished the game by scoring two runs in the fifth innning. Sunnyside scored two runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Dave Oeffling led Cop­ permine with three hits in four at-bats and three RBI's. Tim Whitman and Chuck Marke both added two hits each. Jim Williams, Dan McGrave, and Bob Fowler were all 2 for 3 for Sunnyside. Fox Hole Beats Old Bridge Fox Hole outscored Old Bridge 7-3 in the first inning and held on for a four rim, 12-8 win in the first game played Tuesday, May 16. Old Bridge scored three times in the top of the first, thanks to two errors by the Fox Hole and a single by Rick Wakitsch and a triple by Ron Mityer. Fox Hole countered with a seven run inning, on the strength of eight hits, the big blow being a two-run homer by Dick Kazlausky. Fox Hole scored three more runs in the third inning, to lead 10-3 until the sixth inning. Old Bridge scored four runs in the sixth, to narrow the lead Fighting Child Abuse Gov. James R. Thompson has announced that a recent dramatic rise in reported child abuse incidents has convinced him to add thirty to forty more child abuse caseworkers to the twenty-nine new ones already proposed in his fiscal 1979 state budget. "We must make cer­ tain," Thompson said, "that we have the people and the tools to detect child abuse and to stop it and prevent it wherever possible." A home run by Tom Les of Old Bridge-ended the scoring for the game. Dick Kazlausky was paced the Fox Hole, with two hits in four at-bats, including a homerun and three RBI's. Denny Smith with a perfect three-for-three day and Dick Meyers with three hits in four trips helped the attack. Joe Dehn, Rick Wakitsch, and Greg Freund had two hits each for the Bridge, with Freund scoring twice and driving in two runs. ' The Fox Hole is now 2-0, while the Old Bridge is 1-1. Johnsburg Tavern Over Hiller's The second game May 16, found Johnsburg Tavern using an eight-run third inning to beat Hiller Construction 12-6. Johnsburg Tavern's record now stands at 2-0, while Hiller's is 0-2. Two Hiller errors keyed the big inning, and Mark Bentz added a single and a double in the same inning. Hiller's had lead 4-0 after scoring four times in the first, but could not hold the lead. Mark Bentz ended the game 2 for 3, with two RBI's, while his brother Myron was 2 for 4, with two RBI's. Wayne Hiller and Wayne Frantz also had two hits in the game. No member of Hiller's could manage two. hits. Dan Miller used a first inning double to drive in two runs. Player of the Week Center fielder Darrel An­ derson of Town Pump is the second Player of the Week for this season. Anderson was 2 for 3 against Hautzinger, scored four runs, drove in three, and had a double and a triple to pace the Pump attack. Among those initiated was Lisa Michelle Newport of 1616 Ranch road, McHenry, a sophomore student at the university. Miss Newport is enrolled in the UMC Agriculture division. Active on the UMC campus for nearly 40 years, Sigma Rho Sigma membership is limited to fifty students. Membership is based on scholarship, ac­ tivities, service and the promise of future leadership and contributions. Miss Newport has been ac­ tive in several UMC activities, including university dancer and Phi Eta Sigma honorary. TO ACCEPT DEGREE Mary C. Catanzaro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph G. Catanzaro, Jr., of McHenry, will be among graduates of Barat college, Lak^ Forest, Sunday, May 28, to accept her degree. In addition to receiving departmental honors, she has earned a bachelor of arts degree in management and business. By Dick Rabbitt Seniors Mike Burman and A1 Reinboldt of Coach Dan Boland's McHenry High track team qualified for the state finals Friday night at Rock- ford. Reinboldt finished second in both the shot and discus. He heaved the shot 54' 11" and the discus 157', easily qualifying for the state finals. Burman ran the two mile in 9:32.1 to finish fourth, and came back to finish fifth in the mile, qualifying with a 4:25.6. Chris Nowell finished fourth in the 120 high hurdles, Mike Williams was fifth in the long jump, and the mile relay team of Dan Schaefer, Marty Nuss, A1 Reinboldt and Marty Deener took third place. - The Warriors were tied for eighth place with 17 points. Dekalb won the meet. The state finals will be held this weekend at Eastern Illinois university in Charleston, 111. HEADS BLACKHAWK Arthur J. Moore was reelected to a second term as president of the Blackhawk Area council, Boy Scouts of America, Inc., Rockford. Elections took place May 21 at the fifty-fourth annual business meeting in Freeport. Governmental Disgrace Gov. Thompson has an­ nounced that a special thirty member fraud investigation unit from the Department of Law Enforcement has begun intensive efforts to stop Medicaid fraud in the state's welfare system. The new unit was created after Thompson's Welfare Fraud Task Force recommended that respon­ sibility for conducting criminal fraud investigations be tran­ sferred from the Department of Public Aid to the Department of Law Enforcement. "Fraud in the state's welfare system is a governmental disgrace," Thompson said. "This new un* will put the investigation c fraud where it belongs~in thr hands of experienced in vestigators who have the ex pertise to conduct thorougr investigations and pu: criminals in jail."
