GOD BLESS Donald Smith Selected For Youth Conservation Donald Smith, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Smith of 4004 Grand avenue, McHenry, is among twenty selected from McHenry county for service this summer with the Youth Conservation corps. He will work in the Kaskaski Experiemental forest in Shawnee National forest, Elizabethtown, 111., for five weeks betwen July 9 and Aug. »2. J The program is undertaken by the McHenry County Con­ servation department working in conjunction with the National Youth Conservation corps. Maribeth Karas' anticipation of this study program is finally a reality as of Thursday, June 6, when her flight leaves for Gatway air­ port, London. She and the other members of the Wheaton in England program, will be staying in London for two weeks, where studies in medieval literature, post-1700 English literature, and English drama will begin. What excitement to be able to visit the actual places where these writings originated. Then there will be seven weeks in Oxford, at St. Anne's college, with two three-day excursions to South and North Wales. After the nine-week study course is completed, Maribeth will have ten days to tour in Europe, principally Germany. In addition to all the schooling and touring, Maribeth will also be ren­ dezvousing with Johnsburgite, Christian Goetschel, who is stationed in London in the Air Force! God speed,. dear Maribeth. Seated in the pleasant home of Mrs. Culver on Waukegan street in this city, where Mrs. Button now makes her home, this kindly little woman dreams of her soldier boy who marched away to war in February, 1864, never to return. She gave her 16-year- old boy, Private Clinton D. Rorer of Company H, Eighth Illinois Cavalry, to her country, and about four months later on June 5, 1864, he died of typhoid fever in a hospital at Camp Relief at Washington, D.C. The four McHenry boys, William Vales, Albert Vales, Anthony Schneider and Ralph Justen, who have been at­ tending the Jasper college academy at Jasper, Ind., this year, will return to their homes next week. The boys have been very busy during the last few weeks with their college work and music. The Jasper college band won second place at the contest at Bloomington, 111. City of McHnery police are preparing for a drive to determine the number of vehicle owners who have not purchased 1968 city vehicle licenses. Licenses were due Jan 1. The city grants two months' time for owners to secure their licenses, then a penalty of fifty cents per month starts on the first day of March. Sample copies of the Plaindealer will go to every boxholder in the McHenry, Wonder Lake and spring Grove areas on Wednesday of this week, a total of 14,000 in all. Training Project A $600,000 training and employment project for wards of the state was announced during May by Director Margaret M. Kennedy of the Illinois Department of Children and Family services (DCFS). The new program is funded by the federal government. It will help teach state wards how to find and hold jobs and will include training in various vocational and technical skills. Public Hearings The Illinois Environmental Protection agency will hold public hearings June 15 in Springfield to obtain comment from Illinois residents on future state environmental control plans. Hearings on Illinois Department of Agriculture proposals to fight horse venereal disease have been scheduled by that department for June 8 in Mount Vernon, June 14 in Springfield and June 15 in Aurora, according to departmental announcements.
