WAUKEGAN RD. McHENRY. ILLINOIS Inside tips about outside foot care By HOMER CIRCLE Angling Editor, Sports Afield There may be sorrier situations for an outdoorsman than having unhappy feet, but I doubt it. After more than a half- century of traipsing around the outdoors, I have learned--the hard way--how to keep my feet happy. What I put on my feet depends on what I'm going to do. But whatever 1 do in the Great Outdoors, my feet are unhappy if they are too cold, too hot. and wet. Perhaps you think uncomfortable feet are part of being outdoors. Not so. I've done a heap of experimenting to de termine how to keep my feet carefree, whatever the sea son. First, I always wear cushiony socks. I happen to prefer cotton. You may like wool or synthetics. Use what pleases your feet. The object is to put something soft around your feet, because no matter how hardy you are, your feet are delicate and should be protected from friction, bruises and irrita tion. Next, I put on a product called Bama Sokkets. These socks are imported by Royal Red Ball from Europe, where some ingenious guys in vented a way of keeping feet warm or cool, whichever is necessary to keep you com fortable. Here's how the Bama Sokkets work: The socks are made in two layers. The outside layer is a "wick" which absorbs the water that condenses be tween your sock and the inner wall of the boot. The inner fiber layer forms a bar rier that keeps the water from seeping back on your feet. In cold weather, this bar rier retains body heat. In the summer, when your feet perspire heavily from exer tion, the sock carries the humid air through to the outer layer, condenses, ab sorbs the moisture, and low ers the temperature inside the boot. Its a kind of a port able air conditioner. Over the socks goes one of my favorites, Bush Boots. They have a waterproof bot tom with a cat-foot traction and a super-tough nylon/ rubber/nylon top. Bush boots are so light you wonder if you forgot to put them on. They fit snug around the ankle, so my heel doesn't rub as I walk ... no blisters.
