League Clarifies "Art Of Mothering" Misconceptions The McHenry and Fox Lake groups of La Leche will meet this month to discuss the art of breastfeeding and overcoming difficulties. Mothering through good breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby. Breastfeeding is a simple, normal function - a natural system of supply and demand that best serves mother and baby. Mothers through the ages have happily nursed their babies successfully. Breast feeding has not become more complicated; only society's attitudes toward it has created problems. It was to solve these problems that La Leche league came into being. Poor advice, criticism, or other problems may cause a mother to decide not to breastfeed or to end the nursing relationship prematurely. At a La Leche league meeting ex pectant mothers and nursing mothers can talk to other mothers who have successfully overcome problems and happily nursed their babies. The lending library is an ex cellent source of helpful in formation. Nursing babies are always welcome. The Fox Lake group will meet Wednesday, June 14, at 8 p.m. The McHenry group will meet Thursday, June 8, at 8 p.m. For further information about breastfeeding or the meetings call, Mrs. Kenneth (Chris) Dems in Fox Lake or Mrs. Gerald (Mary) Chatham in McHenry. School Counselor Listed As June Meeting Lecturer Double Dilemma Mothers of Twins club will meet at 8 p.m., June 13, at St. Paul's church, 485 Woodstock street, Crystal Lake. This month's program will be a lecture on learning disabilities given by Beverly Boine, a counselor at Briargate school. Double Dilemma meets the second Tuesday of every month and is open to all mothers of multiple birth children. Come enjoy a night out with other mothers who share the unique experience of having twins. For more information about the club or this month's meeting please contact Mrs. Ronald (Ann) Vacula of McHenry. Food Poisoning Adds That Personal Touch To Potluck When you take your favorite dish to a potluck dinner, you'll want to be sure that it has that special "personal" touch. Nancy Moore, University of Illinois Extenstion home economist, suggests you make sure that personal touch is not a dose of food poisoning. Remember food safety prac tices when preparing a dish for a potluck meal, she advises. Geanliness is essential to food safety. Before handling food, always wash hands carefully with soap and water. Weat rubber gloves if you have a cut or infection on your hands. Make sure you wash all utensils, cutting boards and counter surfaces thoroughly with hot, soapy water before and after using them, Mrs. Moore continues. Germs can grow rapidly to dangerous levels within 30 or 40 minutes. So, don't leave food on the table. As soon as everyone has finished eating, quickly rinse any empty dishes and set them aside. It takes only a few minutes to cover the leftover food and place it in the refrigerator. If there is not enough room in the refrigerator for all of the casserole dishes and serving platters, save on space by wrapping what you can in aluminum foil. Also, have some disposable containers on hand. You can refrigerate leftovers in these containers and send them home with guests when they leave. If you take safety precautions with food, your guests will enjoy a pleasant and wholesome meal. The effects of food poisoning are often confused with those of flu-headache, cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. All hostesses want to spare their guests these symptoms, says Mrs. Moore. With these tips in mind you can have a safe dinner and avoid food poisoning, she continues. For further information concerning the proper methods of cooking and storing food products, she suggests you write to: "Food Safety," In formation division, AMS- APHIS, U.S. Department of Agriculture, 536 S.
