Cal Skinner, Jr.'s public affairs scholarships are now available. Each year state law allows every other state legislator to designate four students at the University of Illinois plus four at the other state universities to receive a tuition scholarship, and in some cases, some fees. "A lot of legislators just give them away to the sons and daughters of prominent people or to big campaign supporters or contributors," Skinner explained. "Under the program I've developed, the student himself (or herself) is rewarded for activity in public or civic affairs." Skinner does not select the winners himself; instead, he has a committee of five educators representing the district geographically. "I have given my scholarship Advisory committee four guidelines for selection," Skinner said. "They take it from there. All I do is sig»-U»«- •final application form after*** they have made the selec tions." ; Skinner's four guidelines follow: (1) Residence in the 33rd Legislative district; (2) Acceptance at the state university of one's choice as a full-time student; (3) Evidence of activity in public and civic affairs; (4) Relative need among applicants. Applications may be obtaiend by calling Skinner's Crystal l^ake office at 459-6050. There is an answering service, so calls may be made night or day. "Just leave your name and address antrtve'Il see that you get an application form," Linda Colcord, Skinner's Crystal l^ake assistant said. Applications may also be obtained by writing Skinner at Vox 308, Crystal Lake, 111., 60W4 or in care of the State Capuol, Springfield, 111., 62706. Deadline for application submission, including recommendations, is July 1. With the start of the 1978-79 academic year, $2,500 is being budgeted to finance a new program known as the Student Project Assistance fund. Students and student organizations not having ac cess to usual sources of campus funds to support new activities and projects to serve a large part of the student body in educational and cultural ways can request financial assistance from the Dads association. Individual students with unique activity needs will also be considered. The request must first be approved by a member of the Dads association from the student's home town. If ap proved, it must next receive support by the local county- These units have excellent E E R ratings for economical operating cost.
