If we do not control the non­ emergency calls, many members may find they can no longer afford the time involved in uic ovjuau o vpvi auvuo. Another important factor is the number of times the squad is already on a call and another call comes in before the first is completed. If the first call is not a true emergency and the second one is, the delay caused by having to complete the first call can be crucial to the real emergency call It is im­ perative that the emergency crews, vehicles and equipment at all times be free to respond promptly to emergency calls. The delay could cost someone's life. Perhap? it would be in order to explain what some non­ emergency calls are: Patient strains back working i^ garden over weekend. Does not seek treatment. By mid-week back is worse, calls rescue squad. This is NOT an emergency. No treatment can be given by the rescue squad, transportation by private ambulance, car or taxi is indicated. Patient is under doctor's care, calls doctor and com­ plains of feeling worse Doctor says better come in for check­ up. Calls rescue squad This is not an emergency, the only thing required is transportation which should be private am­ bulance, car or taxi. Patient has appointment to be admitted to the hospital Calls rescue squad. This is not an emergency If the rescue squad ' would transport this patient the patient would first go through the emergency room as the rescue squad does not take patients directly to hospital rooms This would incur a needless additional charge for the emergency room. Again, private am­ bulance, car or taxi should be used If there is no serious injury or life threatening situation if no treatment by the rescue squad is required, if transportation is the only thing necessary, we regret that we will be unable to accommodate you. We simply have to concentrate on the many emergency calls we receive. Requently we are requested to take a patient to a health care facility other that the McHenry hospital emergency roonv Our charter prohibits us from doing this and we cannot spare an emergency vehicle and crew for the length of time it takes to drive out of town and back. If it is an emergency, we will take the patient to the McHenry hospital emergency room for treatment and stabilization, he can then be transferred elsewhere by private ambulance For the McHenry Area Rescue squad to continue to provide a high level of emergency service to the public, the cooperation of tire public will be necessary. (Notes When you see a private vehicle with a flashing blue light, it is a volunteer answering an emergency call.
