Twice Told Tales | FIFTY YEARS AGO < Taken from the files of July 19, 1928) « One of the most impressive services ever witnessed in McHenrv was observed at St. Mary's church, July 15, when the Reverend Charles S. Nix pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church, celebrated his Silver Sacredotal jubilee on that day. Father Nix was ordained in Chicago by Archbishop Quigley on July 11, 1903, and has been most active during his twenty- five years in the Sacredotal order in doing good and working for the benefits, best interests and spiritual welfare of his parishioners. Final boundaries for a Fox river conservancy district were fixed by county judges from counties touched by the proposed district at a meeting at Geneva and Aug. 10 fixed as the date for an election to vote on the proposition. The district is comprised of 263 square miles lying along the two banks of the river and extends from the Wisconsin line south to the north line of La Salle county. An election has been called in the latter county to vote on a separate district. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of July 28, 1938) In McHenry county is a beautiful spot called Pistakee Bay. Many word pictures could be written about this lovely place and no doubt, many have been. But there must be some added attraction to this magic name, especially in the spring and summer time. On the shores of Pistakee Bay stands a group of buildings shaded by tall trees. As you enter the grounds you encounter a signboard with the inscription "Ave Maria". It is the Catholic Charities summer home for mothers and children. A group of thirty-five mothers and 140 children made up the first group of the season to visit "Villa Maria". They travelled over the Chicago and Nor- thweatern railroad, whose officers have furnished tran­ sportation since the opening of the camp in 1926. The Johnsburg Reds proved too strong for the North Chicago Giants colored team last Sunday, winning a 6 to 1 game with ease. Bud Miller was on the mound for the Reds and had things in hand throughout. Bud struck out ten batters and allowed only 6 hits. During the past week since she won her title, word has come form California that her picture has appeared in at least three papers there. It was also in the St. Petersburg, Fla., Times. McHenry firemen spent a busy afternoon Tuesday with five (alls within a two-hour period.' While- the severe electrical storm was respon­ sible for at least three of the fires, it was believed that two -were of other origin. The McHenry County Deputy Sheriff's association is spon­ soring a water safety show July 28 at the Bowling Bar beach in Johnsburg. The show will be under supervision of Sheriff Henry Nulle, who is supervisor of public safety of McHenry county. The Woodstock Moose baseball team visited John­ sburg and won a 9 to 5 game from the Tigers. Don Peacock hurled for the Moose and was a real dandy on the mound. One hit, a single by Charlie Hiller, kept Peacock from a no-hitter. Miss Frances Vycital and her brother, Charles, donned authentic costumes for "International Day" in McHenry. Dog Show At Fairgrounds PAGE 19 - PLA1NDKALER - FRIDAY, JULY 21,1198 This year as In previous years, the McHenry County Dog show will be held at the McHenry county fairgrounds, located in Woodstock. The first show will be Sunday, July 23, at 2 p.m. in Massy hall and the second show will be Saturday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. in the county highway building. This year there will be three classes. The first year is the sub-novice class. In this class the handler and dog in­ dividually go through a series of exercises on leash consisting of a heeling pattern, a figure 8, a stand for examination, a recall, and then in a group, the long sit and down. The second year is the novice class. In this class the handler and dog go through a more complex heeling pattern in that it is done both on and off leash. The stand for examination and recall are also done off leash, having the figure 8 exercise on leash. As a group, the handlers and dogs will do the long sit and long down off leash with the handler across the show ring from their dog. Graduate novice is the third year class. With this class everything is done off leash and the long sit and down are longer in time with the handler out of sight from the dog. While each handler and dog are going through these exercises there is a Judge scoring them and each time a mistake is made, by either dog or handler, points are deducted. The maximum number of points for all exercises in each class is 200. At the July 23 show, trophies will be awarded.
