Then wash in a gallon of water to which you have added half a cup of chlorine bleach and a small amount of detergent. Run the curtain through your wash er in hot water on a shortened cycle. This same technique also works for plastic curtains and kitchen appliance covers. | pfr^L^i/P GROUP. INC. P.O. BOX 143 M<HiN«V III *0040 $15/385-1771 I Hot Weather And Dogs Unlike* man and other animals that have the ability to sweat freely, dogs have a relatively poor development of sweat glands so that less moisture evaporates from the skin Dogs lose body heat primarily through breathing, by the vaporization of moisture in exhaled air In hot weather breathing becomes faster but not deeper, which causes an increased water and carbon dioxide loss. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity or improper ventilation over burdens the dog's heat- dissipating mechanism and places an extra burden on circulatory and respiratory systems These conditions can cause heat stress Pets confined in automobiles, even if the win dows are slightly open, and pets kept outside without proper housing and shade are in greatest danger of heatstroke and heat exhaustion Heatstroke, the most common and most often fatal syndrome in dogs, is caused by exposure to high temperatures and humidity and poor ventilation Heatstroke develops rapidly Physical symptoms include panting, a staring or anxious expression, failure to respond to commands, warm dry skin, extremely high fever (110 degrees F ), rapid heartbeat and collapse Heat exhaustion or heat prostration is another form of heatstroke which may occur in animals following prolonged exposure to intense heat and heavy exertion Salt deficiency is also a cause Heat exhaustion develops less rapidly than heatstroke It is characterized by fatigue, muscular weakness and circulatory collapse Puppies, older or overweight dogs, and dogs with a history of cardiovascular diseases are most susceptible to heat stress Short-nosed dogs like the bulldog, pug, pekingese and boxes are likely to suffer more in hot weather. These dogs have greater difficulty in breathing, which reduces the amount of body heat loss In heatstroke cases, high fever must be reduced rapidly to save the dog's life and prevent permanent brain damage Body temperatures of 106 degrees F., and above can be tolerated for only a few minutes before irreversible damage occurs to the central nervous system The most effective treatment is to immerse the dog in ice water If this is not possible, spray the dog with cold water from a garden hose. Recovery depends on prompt treatment The dog should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment and to make sure that no permanent damage has been caused Most hot weather problems can be avoided by observing a few simple rules 1) never leave a dog in a closed car for any length of time; 2) avoid excessive exercise; 3) keep plenty of fresh drinking water available at all times for the dog; 4) provide proper housing and shade, 5) if a dog shows signs of heat stress, move him to a cool place, apply cold water to the body, and consult your veterinarian at once DOGS FOH ADOPTION Sheltie mix, spayed female, 2 years, housebroken, all shots, very affectionate Shepherd mix, spayed female, i'K years, housebroken. all shots, ex cellent disposition.
