PAGE «• PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. AUGUST 18. ltIS McHenry Hosts John J. Zriny Memorial Tourney The first annual John J. Zriny M e m o r i a l 1 5 - y e a r - o l d tournament was played beginning Aug. 6 and finished this past weekend with area baseball leagues invited to send an all-star team to compete in the tourney. The Dundee All-Stars defeated McHenry in the championship game Monday night to go home with the first place trophy The tournament was played in the memory of John J. Zriny who was killed in an automobile accident July 3. Woodstock and Wonder Lake met in the first game of the tournament Aug. 6 at noon. Wonder Lake came out on top by a score of 8-3. At 3 p.m., McHenry tangled with St. Juliana, with McHenry winning 6-0. Jeff McNish threw a one-hitter for the winners. In the third game, which started at 6 p.m., Lake Zurich defeated Richmond, 6-2. The following Monday, Dundee defeated Island Lake to advance to the quarterfinals of the double elimination tournament. Games were played every night last week, and three games were played Saturday and Sunday, to determine which two teams would play for1 the championship on Monday night. McHenry and Dundee advanced to the finals with one loss each, coming at the hands of each other. The first time the two teams met in the tournament, McHenry came out on top 2-1. Dundee evened the series at one game each, by rebounding with a 4-3 win in game two. In the championship game, the Dundee pitching and hitting was too much for the locals as Dundee came out on top 13-0. Keith Belzer got McHenry's only hit in the game. Woodstock finished in third place and were tided by a triple play in one game, one of many fine fielding plays turned in by the 15-year-olds during the tournament. In the fifteen games played, only five homeruns were hit, one being a grand-slammer by a Lake Zurich player. McHenry league officials termed the tournament a great success and are already looking forward to the second annual tourney next year. t \> ' * a V , "THOU SHALL NOT STEAL"-(From left) It appears that Russell of the Dundee All-Stars will be safe as he attempts to steal second daring action Monday night during the championship game of the first annual John Zriny Memorial tournament. Jeff Major, of the McHenry Stars, however, reaches for the high throw and in the second and third photos, puts the ball in front of Russell who runs into the tag and is called "OUT!". Dundee went on to win the tourney by defeating the McHenry team 13- 0 in the championship game, giving the local team a second place finish. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR As we start this bit of chatter, the lights have been going off and on like a yo-yo Thunder, lightning and rain make us happy to be snug in our home It is the time of year when farmers worry about lightning striking their barns. It always happens when buildings are filled with hay and harvested grain Can't kick about lack of rain this summer Sib Whiting remarked a while back that he never saw corn with such a deep green Mosquitoes have thrived this summer Some say that spraying hasn't done any good Just think how much worse it would be without spraying One thing that hasn't helped the mosquito problem is the high grass and weeds in so many places this year Our idea of setting two days aside during the summer as "Weed Cutting Days" never got off the ground Everybody could get into the act Speaking of weeds Wayne Gaylord. known as 'Green Thumb Gaylord" in his neighborhood, spent part of his vacation moving some of his beautiful plants to a new location and pounding down sticks to support the tall ones Upon close examination, an admiring committee found the most beautiful plant of all to be a weed Gaylord's thumb is still green, but his face is red You can't beat the long clout at the old ball park With Dave Kingman finding the range of the left field fence, the Cubs have been murderous of late Tuesday night Steve Stone pitched a 2-hitter for the Sox down in Texas and lost a 1-0 ball game Richie Zisk won the game with a mighty homer when Stone threw him a fat pitch with a 2-0 count. Back to school talk is in the air and in the ads. Kids who "hate" school can tell you right down to the hour how much time they have left on their summer vacation Older students, who realize the value of an education, seem anxious to get back in the swing of school activities and meet their friends Happiest of all are the mothers who have been on call 24 hours a day since vacation started. Give us a big smile, Mom. DIVOT DOUS M.C.C. After a two-week interim, Gub and Gass Championship for the ladies resumed Tuesday, Aug 15, at McHenry Country club under humid skies and oppresive heat Carol Cooney maintains her lead although suffering from a minor injury to her wrist which caused her to post a high 91, five shots over her first round In the net scoring for Class A, Millie Leisten had a 3-stroke lead at 150 for the two rounds, followed by Carla Wright with a 153 and Virginia Turner with 154 In Class B, Sue Martin is holding her lead with gross scores of 104-104-208. With an accumulated 151 net, Betty Smith has taken the net lead, followed by Dot Freund with 156 and Caroline Harger with 162 In Class C, the picture has changed somewhat Barb Leight and Dot Christiensen are tied at 244 each for ac cumulated gross For low net, Virginia Spengel holds a one- stroke lead at 163 for the two rounds followed by Betty Rode at 164 Shooting one of her best rounds. Mary Mutchinsky has taken the lead in Class D with a total gross of 245 In the net scoring, Tnsh Sayler leads with a 141 followed by Toots Gerstad at 164 and Fran Hermann and Caroline Hesch each at 165. Next week, the final round of the 3-week event will be played and, with a few turnarounds, results may be suprising to all concerned The only birds registered for the day were by Sue Martin on number 4 and Joanie Buss on number 14 And, the only chip-in was that on number 15 by Trish Sayler The weekly events showed Millie Leisten with a low net of 73 in Gass A and Liz Nolan low putts of 28 In Class B. Sue Martin registered a low net of 74 and low putts of 29 In Class C, Virginia Spengel low netted 79 and Ethel Koehler low putted 33 In Gass D, Mary Mutchinsky low netted 67 and Betty Wayman low putted 32 Notes from the Nifty Niners show that Dorothy Flynn had low puts of 15, accomplishing that with some real eye openers such as the forty-footer on number four, left her team mates agog The luck of the Irish was with Madonna Kennedy on number eight when her ball went into the creek only to bounce off an aquatic leprechaun and land on the green side And, Joyce Kentzel must be using a different kind of ball (sponge, perhaps') to have it bounce in front of a trap, then into the trap, and then out of the trap and onto the green Its that kind of thing that brings them back! If games four or five are necessary they will be played on Monday and Wednesday, Aug. 28 and 30. The seven in ning games will all be played at Peterson Park with game time at 6:30 p.m The Bridge swept its second straight playoff win and moved into the playoff finals with an easy 12-2 win over St. Regis. The victory was the Bridge's twenty-third straight in league competition. The winners also avenged last year's semifinal loss at the hand's of the same St. Regis ballclub. King's Row, with the help of a 9-run fifth inning, swept to its second victory in a row over Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl The 15-11 victory eliminates the Bowl while King's Row moves into the playoff finals Freund, Gilpin Lead Old Bridge Doug Freund and Gary Gilpin led the winners in Monday's semi-final win Freund went 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored while Gilpin slammed a pair of 2-run homers plus a sacrifice fly good for 5 RBI's The Bridge was in command nearly the entire contest They scored 2 runs in both the second and third innings and took a 4-0 lead. In the second, Tom Les and Steve Rohrer cracked back-to back doubles for the first run Tim Althoff hit the first of his 3 singles to move Rohrer to third and Gilpin sacrificed for the second run In the third, Ron Miller smashed a 2-run homer scoring Doug Freund in front of him Bridge Takes K-Run Lead The fourth inning saw 4 more Bridge runs cross the plate as they took an 8-run lead Les singled to open the nning and advanced to secon on a flyout Tim Althoff sin ,led in Les and Gilpin smashed his first 2-run homer One out later, Doug Freund homered making the score 8-0 St. Regis scored their first run in their half of the fourth Bob Buss singled but was forced at second on Joe Lafontaine's fielder's choice. Scott Stull and Matt Oik followed with base hits and Lafontaine scored. The Bridge nearly scored in the fifth, when Greg Freund singled and Tom Les hit a 2-out double. Freund was out at home on the relay throw from Buss to Mike Major. Regis pushed across their second and final run of the game in the next inning. Mike Reilly led off with a single and advanced to third on an outfield error. Pete Smith flew out to center and Reilly scored after the catch. Gilpin Connects Again Old Bridge put the game out of reach with 3 more runs in the sixth Gary Gilpin hit another 2-run homer, scoring Tim Althoff in front of him. An out later, Doug Freund tripled and scored on a throwing error by the realy man. Greg Freund added a solo homerun in the seventh. That gave the Bridge a 12-2 lead which stood as the final as St. Regis went down in order in their half of the seventh Old Bridge ab r h rbi D. Freund 4 3 4 1 Miller 4 112 Dehn 4 0 0 0 G. Marke drove in 3 runs and Howard had one RBI. King's Row opened the scoring with two runs in the first. Howard Marke and randy Schultz hit singles after two were out, Howard scoring. An error on the second baseman on a ground ball permitted another run to score. Raymond's Takes 4-2 Lead Raymond's Bowl scored 4 runs in their half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Phil Oeffling, Jim Yaworski and Rich Meyers all hit singles, Oeffling scoring. After a fly out, Wayne Hiller singled to load the bases and Don Bentz singled to right to drive in two runs. A sacrifice fly scored the fourth run of the inning. In the second, the Bowl added another run as Paul Morenz, Yaworski and Rich Meyers all singled, with Meyers getting his second RBI of the game. Rick Sorenson tripled in the third and scored on a single by Howard to make the score 5-3. Bowl Increases Lead Raymond's came up with 3 more runs in their half of the third to take an 8-3 lead. Don Bentz, Ted Freund and Vinnie Freund hit singles with Bentz scoring. A sacrifice fly scored another run and an infield error permitted the third run to cross the plate. An infield error in the fourth by Raymond's preceded a hit by Jesse Watson and a fly out, allowing the Row to narrow the gap to 8-4. Myron Bentz recaptured the run for Raymond's with a homerun to right center to make the score 9-4. It seemed to this point that King's Row oculd not match the Bowl's scoring. The Bowl was only three innings away from tying up the series Row Rallies For Nine King's Row apparently did not see it that way as they erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning The first seven batters hit safely and 14 men batted in the inning. Chuck Marke lined a 2-run triple after Sorenson and Howard had singled to get things rolling. Schultz, Tom Whitman and Jesse Watson all singled to load the bases and Tim Whitman cracked the second triple of the inning for 3 RBI's. A grounder to short followed and a play at the plate was late and Whitman scored John Walkington followed with a homerun over the right fielder's head and the Row led 13-9. Howard nipped a budding Bowl rally as he robbed Tom Spasojevich of a hit by snaring his line drive which was headed up the middle. Three hits in the inning allowed one run to score Looking back, Howard's catch probably helped prevent the Bowl rally from getting larger. King's Row added 2 runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 5 runs. A walk, a pinch single by Bill Cable, a fielder's choice and Sorenson's third hit of the game scored one run One out later, Marke doubled home another run Tom Spasojevich hit a long homerun after two were out for the Bowl's only run in the final inning. Vinnie Freund followed with his third hit of the game, but was stranded at first when Wayne Frantz popped out to second to end the game.
