Farmer's Almanac Crowned Champ Of Women's League - R\GE 7 - PLAINDEALEK - WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 23,1978 The Farmer's Almanac has been crowned the champ of the McHenry Women's Softball featfUe after they defeated Brake Parts 10-3,-last Thur­ sday. Brake Parts was defending playoff champ of the league and had won the title the last two years in a row. On Aug. 15, Farmer's Almanac defeated Ed's Rental, 13-0, and Brake Parts beat McHenry Trophies, 9-1, to reach the finals of the playoffs. Thursday, the two, hard­ hitting teams from the Thur­ sday night division of the league, met to determine the champion for 1978. In the first inning, Brake Parts couldn's score, and Fanner's Alftianac notched one run. Sue Heuser had a line drive single and scored to give the Almanac the lead. An error in the top of the second by the Almanac cat­ cher, permitted Linda Lent to score to tie the game. Two runs scored later in the inning, giving Brake Parts a 3-1 lead. In the Almanac half of the inning, Wendy Gee tripled to score one run and scored on a double by Mozell Roth to tie the score. Mozell scored on a double by Wendy "Stretch" Rogers to give the Almanac the lead for good. Brake Parts didn't score in the third or fourth, and the Almanac increased their lead by scoring 4 more runs in the third inning to make the score 8-3. Wendy Gee's and Cindy Moe's triples highlighted the inning. Brake Parts loaded the bases in the fifth inning and was unable to score, as the Almanac defense stiffened. Wendy Gee added another hit in the fifth inning for Farmer's Alamanac as they scored 2 more runs. Wendy was out at the plate when she tried to stretch the hit into a homerun. The remainder of the game was strictly defense, with no more runs being scored and Almanac holding on for 10-3 win. Farmer's Almanac was awarded the first place trophy which had belonged to the Brake Parts for the last two years / Summer's Over, Football's Here' Summer came tean early ead for area high school football hopefuls, as practice has already begun. Johnsburg plays their first game Saturday, Sept. 16 at Grayslake and the Marian Central season begins Friday, Sept. 8, against Woodstock. Freshman, sophomore and junior varsity squads have also begun practicing at all three schools, with most teams working out twice a day until school starts. This year will mark McHenry's first in the newly established Fox Valley conference. Johnsburg will compete in the Shark conference and Marian again, will compete in the Suburban Catholic West conference. Little John's Knocks Nail From Playoffs Little John's played spoiler on Wednesday, August 2. They beat Rusty Nail 13-11 in eleven innings and eliminated any Nail hopes for the playoffs. In the "regular scheduled game, the Nail won a 17-16 slugfest in Which both teams totalled 22 hits apiece. The first contest, which had been susj>ended after 8 innings July 14 due to darkness, was picked up in the top of the ninth. Gary Snell came up with the big hit for Little John's in the top of the eleventh inning. His three-base hit scored Bob Freund who had singled. Don Harris added insurance with an RBI single to give Little John's the 2-run edge The loss eliminated not only Rusty Nail from playoff con­ tention, but also O'Brewery, who needed a 3-way tie for fourth to get a crack at the playoffs Len Ackermann led the winners in game two with a perfect 4 for 4 plus a sacrifice fly. Ackermann included 2 homenins plus 4 runs scored and 5 RBI's Twig Miller also went 4 for 4 and added 4 runs scored with a double and a triple John Connell went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's, while both Gary Sch- mitt and Jim Mclnerney had 3 hits and 2 runs scored each Scmitt added 3 RBI's with Mclnerney getting 2 RBI's. Schmitt also hit a homerun which easily cleared the tennis court fence in right In fact, the ball landed on the fly in the middle of the court! Gary Bush hit another Nail homer and added a single plus two runs scored, and Kevin Bauer was again held hitless" Ray Franklin had 3 hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead Little John's Franklin scored 4 runs and drove in two Fred Shepston added 3 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's while Bob Wakitsch went 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and an RBI Wakitsch ends the 1978 season at .500, tops for Little John's. Dan Stanowski had 2 doubles and a triple while Bob Freund and Gary Snell had 2 hits and 2 runs scored each Freund had 2 RBI's and Snell added his second triple of the evening Don Harris drove in 2 runs with a sacrifice and a base hit Vic Freund had 3 hits and 2 RBI's but one hit, which could have been a homerun. became an out instead, when he passed a runner. Old Bridge Goes Undefeated The Old Bridge Softball club won their twenty-first straight to become only the second team in league history to go un­ defeated during the regular season. The win came at the expense of King's Row by an 8-3 score. Jim Grabowski was the only Bridge batter to hit safely twice, going 2 for 3. Joe Dehn doubled in two and scored one run Rick Wakitsch hit a solo homerun while Ron Miller drove in a run with a base hit and scored two. Greg Freund added a 2-run single. Bruce Harbecke came through with his first major league hit. Harbecke drove in a run with the single, although he was picked off second and thrown out later in the inning John Walkington and Bill Roark each hit safely twice for King's Row Both scored one run Tim Whitman had 2 hits and an RBI while Randy Schultz had a single, one run scored and one RBI O'Brewery Wins Tc Tie For Fourth O'Brewery beat McHenry hospital by a score of 7-1 and gained a tie for fourth place.
