On The Sidelines •y Dick Bobbin Tonight the Warriors open their football season against Stevenson High School of Prarie View. I don't know what it is, even from a coaching standpoint and also a fan standpoint, but the football opener puts a lot of butterflies in players.parents, and fans.and of course coaches. There is probably no greater thrill, than watching the opening kickoff in a high school game, especially the first game of the season. You can watch the college games on T V. or in person, or the professional games, but you still can't beat a high school game when it comes to football. No scholarships. no unsigned contracts, no playing out their option. The kids, are out there playing because they want to play, they take the heartaches, along with the glory of winning, and when the game is over there is a shake of the hand at midfield, and either the long walk back to the locker room, or the long trot, depending on the outcome of the game. But the following week, they are back again to give it another try, still full of vim and vigor. More character is built on a football squad than in any other phase of a young man's life. It is still the only game in town. The Warriors first two non-conference opponents are from the Northwest Suburban. Stevenson was a co-title holder the past three seasons, but the luck of the draw denied them from the state playoffs. Grant is an old foe, and we will have more on them next week. Later this season we will give you what I would call the complicated system of teams qualifying for the state playoffs. You have to be a lawyer to figure out the wording on how to Frank H Frantz, 3606 W. Young street, speeding. 38 mph in a 25 zone James F Kutzler. Safety Courses Required For Youngsters Hunting Boating Or Snowmobiling snowmobile supervision. without adult Youngsters who plan to enjoy the pursuits of hunting, boating, or snowmobiling should sign up now for the Illinois Department of Con servation's mandatory safety courses. A new system of enrolling students in the safety courses in northeastern Illinois which utilizes more volunteer help has been instituted by the Department of Conservation according to Conservation Police Officer Bruce Benstein State law mandates all three courses for youthful par ticipants in these activities. The hunter safety course is required for persons under the age of 16 who wish to hunt but have never before obtained an Illinois hunting license. The boating safety course is required for persons 12 through 17 before they can operate a motorboat without adult supervision. The snowmobile safety course, likewise, is mandated by state law for children 12 through 15 before thev can legally operate a HUNTER SAFETY IN SPECTORS: LAKE COUNTY - Richard Prefontaine, 405 E Longwood Terrace, Mundelein, IL 60060, 312-623-6455; Russell Warye, 1015 Belvidere, Waukegan, IL 60085 , 312-623- 6455. Thankfully.Bill Blankenhorn the A.D., fij- at McHenry has come to our assistance, and along with our good friend Ken Swanson keeps us up to date on the rule changes. According to the "Crusher" there are no new rule changes for the coming season in high school football. In the coming weeks we will keep you posted on all athletic events at McHenry High School, but with the beginning of school and the Labor Day holiday, it is almost impossible to keep up with the activities. My golfing buddy Bobby Beyer and I took it on the chin over the holidays from Jerry Smith and former Chicago Bear, John Kreamcheck. I just want to say that the season is a long way from over and Bob and I will be waiting for the rematch. Looking through the crystal ball for the opening games in the Fox Valley, I see the Warriors, with a expected good home crowd opener in a really tough ball game winning a cloae one over Stevenson. Woodstock should have no & trouble with Marian Central. Although the rivalry is great, the Streaks should win very easy. Grant, next weeks foe of the Warriors, should have little trouble with new Crystal Lake South, who maybe later in the season could be a surprise. Crystal Lake Central under the veteran Bill Mack, loaded with talent should defeat Belvidere of the Big Nine Conference. In probably the best game of the weekend, I pick Marengo under the veteran Rod Poppe to defeat & Jacobs, who according to some should be a favorite in the Fox Valley. Don't forget the Warriors are at home tonight against Stevenson. Sophomores will play at 6 00 p.m. with the varsity getting under way at 8:00 p.m. Hope to see a lot of you at the old ball game. shot rolled into the cup Patrick was one of twelve golfers from McHenry who invaded Galena for two days and spent one day at Brighton Dale Logic "If a bookie, a card sharp, a confidence man, a burglar, a bootlegger all got under one umbrella at one time, which one got wet?" "I give up, which one?" "No one, It wasn't rain ing." The dream shot occurred at Brighton Dale Country Club at Janesville.
